I'm wondering what you folks think about iPhone games.

Some games would seem to be naturals: Solitaire and card games would be great, just point and move the card. Board games like chess would be great for the same reason. I have a harder time seeing arcade-type games, but I'm sure some would work well. I've never played a DS, but I understand it has some touch-screen functionality - does that work well?

the touch screen on the ds is nice, works with the stylus or a finger.

I want Tetris on the iPhone where you literally flip the pieces by turning the iPhone.

Haha, now you're thinking. Or how about one of those games like marble blast where you turn the iphone to navigate the marble through the maze.

Something that I think needs to be touted about the iPhone:

As an aside: when I search for "phone" on Google images, without filters, the first couple of results are iphones and macworld keynote pix, interspersed with "phone sex" pictures.

Without vibrate, the iPhone is useless as a porn device.

Is it official that it doesn't have a vibrate function? I gave up around page 11.

This phone uses vibrate to simulate touch just like I mentioned the iPhone should a week ago:

This phone came out in November 2006. Here is an article about the pinching patent (Apple even had Google Maps in the patent images) from February 2006:

http://hrmpf.com/wordpress/48/new-apple-patents/

So while that phone came first, the patent was filed earlier.

I reckon Apple's lawyers have to file a heck of a lot of lawsuits before all the dust settles.

No confirmation either way. I still say that it *must* have a vibrate function. Do they even make cell phones without it?

Common sense dictates it would, but I remember reading Steve's keynote description, and I felt it was a little ambiguous.

Either he didn't say so because it's obvious, or he didn't say because it doesn't.

They are probably still trying to engineer that feature, otherwise he would have mentioned it. My phone is on vibrate 75% of the time, it would be annoying not to have it.

As far as the vibrate feature goes, does anyone know of any phone that doesn't have vibrate? (Fairly modern phone). Do all the other smart phones have it?

I can't imagine it won't have it as the part is super small and cheap.

Just something I thought about when I didn't see them mention it in any specs.

On another note it seems that the iPhone is in some sort of sleep when not in use and you can't just pull it out to check the time as you need to push a button on the top to wake it.

Nor can you just touch the screen to wake it for obvious reasons.
Wonder what it does though when you leave it on your desk without sleeping it. Does it just turn off the screen and a touch on the screen wakes it or do you need to put that button on the top each time?

I like the Sony devices how the screen is off but the clock always remains on screen.

The Nokia N90 with the Car Zeiss lens didn't have it and it was (well still is) a fairly high end phone. It retailed at about $650 when it first came out.

Yep. The Nokia Communicator 9300i doesn't have one. Apart from that, it is the best phone I have ever used. (At least until the first time I will hold an iPhone in my hands, I am afraid).

There's more to a price calculation than manufacturing costs.
Think of the three years of development alone.
Not to mention the software costs.

It isn't that black and white. Apple has to recoup all the money it cost to develop this phone and consider, marketing, packaging, support and repairs.

Ballmer on the iPhone:

Microsoft CEO Takes On Apple's iPhone - News by InformationWeek

"I don't think this would be a very interesting announcement if anybody else had announced exactly the same product," Ballmer says. "If you didn't put the Apple name in that equation, I'm not sure how people would assess it."

Although that sounds a lot like sour grapes, he is right in a way --just not the way that he means it. While what we saw in the keynote is impressive, it's Apple's name behind the iPhone that gets a lot of people to have confidence that it'll actually work well. Since it's still in the prototype stage and basically nobody has used it, that's a pretty important factor.

Actually, I think the Prada looks nicer than the iPhone. It's also smaller (albeit because it has a smaller screen.) The OS probably kinda sucks though in comparison.

P.S. I liked that movie. I guess I'm a bit ghey too.

Well, let's see. Here's a list of the cell phone companies and the major US carriers they sell stuff through.

Nokia: Cingular, Verizon, T-Mobile, Alltel
Motorola: Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, Alltel
LG: Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, Alltel
Samsung: Cingular, Verizon, T-Mobile, Alltel
RIM BlackBerry: Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, Alltel
Sony Ericsson: Cingular, T-Mobile

This, of course, doesn't include all the smaller rural carriers which have plenty of phones by the likes of Nokia, Motorola, LG, et al. Yep, guess it's really impossible to make phones for more than one carrier. The only major manufacturer I could see that released products for only one carrier was Sanyo, whom Sprint seems to have by the balls. The rest have deals with at least two carriers.

Wow, you got me there.

Oh wait, I remember pretty much all of these phones get raped by carries with Logo's on the hardware and software, crippling Bluetooth so you can't sync or tether it, proprietary GUI's, desktops etc. All the lovely stuff Apple loves somebody else to do with their product.

T-Mobil could have have told Apple to take a hike just because they didn't want to spam the OS up or they didn't like the fact that it has seamless (And free) wifi switching losing the ability to charge people through the nose for cellular data connections. Not hard to believe considering they cripple blu-tooth so you can't use the phone as a modem.

Yes, because if Verizon cripples that feature on a phone that a manufacturer releases on their service, that automatically cripples all the phones that the manufacturer releases on Cingular, T-Mobile, Sprint, Alltel, the rural carriers, and non-US carriers as well.

Not to mention that Verizon isn't really applicable here because this is a GSM phone - T-Mobile and the smaller GSM carriers would work fine with this phone, though.

proprietary GUI's
See above. And, Apple got Cingular to make exceptions for them - same for others as well I'm sure.

T-Mobil could have have told Apple to take a hike just because they didn't want to spam the OS up or they didn't like the fact that it has seamless (And free) wifi switching losing the ability to charge people through the nose for cellular data connections. Uh, T-Mobile has way cheaper prices for data than Cingular. And AFAIK they don't cripple Bluetooth or use a proprietary interface. You're thinking of Verizon there...

From CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Andy Ihnatko :: You could call iPhone perfect

"The iPhone runs the same OS as the Macintosh. And not in the way that Windows Mobile is, I suppose, technically, if you want to split hairs about it, classified somewhere in the Microsoft Windows phylum.

Nope, everything I've learned (both in official briefings and "you and I never spoke, all right?" sort of discussions) says that it truly does run Leopard, the upcoming 10.5 OS that will be released for the Macintosh late in the spring.

Those spiffy UI animations, for instance, come courtesy of Leopard's Core Animation suite."
