Both Firefox and Camino (and possibly other browsers) have the ability to spawn new tabs instead of windows when clicking a link that wants to open a new window. I can't find a way to do this in Safari, except when the link is in a different application. I want the same functionality from links within Safari i.e. I only want 1 browser window (with tabs), no matter what links I follow. Any way to do this?

Do you have tabbed browsing switched on in Safari's preferences?
If so, context menu will show "open in new tab", and Command-clicking a link will do so automatically.

Not the same. I completely agree with jac, this is a definite problem. I loathe having my Google searches open in a new window because I momentarily forgot to hold the apple key.

Still no go, eh? Maybe in version 4 then. This is the one missing feature that keeps me out of Safari. Oh well, Camino's pretty good.
