I've been opening Disk Utility to mount and unmount hard disks as needed but I'd like an easier way.

Anyone know of any software that installs a menu item to do this? I don't want to 'eject' the disk, just unmount it and be able to mount it again later on as needed.

If you can't find something, you could easily create a little terminal executable you could put in your dock to mount/unmount

Bump. Because I'd love to have a more convenient method to do this, too.

Unmounting is easy--drag to the trash to eject
Mounting--cycle power on the hard drive

How about having the drive in the Finder sidebar?

Easy to mount and unmount as required and its always visible. (this is what I do anyway)

No, if you unmount it instead of ejecting it, you can re-mount it again later with out having to power cycle it.

This is what I've been doing via Disk Utility but I want an easier way.

I was just offering a way to do it without Disk Utility, which is what I thought you wanted. But now I have to ask why you're going to all this trouble to mount and unmount. If the disk is connected, just leave it mounted.

Because I don't like it spinning up and down all the time (or even spinning) when I'm not using it. As it spins up, it pauses the whole system.

Energy saver preferences-> turn off Put hard disks to sleep when possible

But mount/unmount from the menu bar would be sweet.
