68k macs and MP3

The older 68k all in one macs (classic, se, etc.) should have enough umph to be used to play mp3's. Does anyone know anyone doing any software for 68k macs.
I would love to be able to hook one of my old macs to my stereo as an mp3 player. It would even be fine if I had to use a specialized system.

And that's because they don't have nearly enough ummph. MP3's are very higly compressed (approx 10x), and when they are played, they are partially uncompressed, play, and compress back up. That's why even the early PowerMacs have a hard time with them, and unless you have a faster G3 or G4, you will get skips.

SoundApp can convert MP3s to other sound formats on a 68K Mac, if that's what you mean, but it can't play 'em without a PPC processor.

What about mp3s on an older ppc? What's the best player? I've been using Cabrio, since thier web site boasts the most support for older systems. Anyone else using anything different?

I used to play MP3s on a power mac 6100 with 24 megs of ram using Sound App. MP3s would play just fine, but I couldn't use the mac for anything else while one was playing. If I tried to click another song on a play list, there would usually be a short delay.
I'd say for a dedicated MP3 player, you'll want a machine that's slightly faster than a 6100, since the 6100 worked, but just not well...
To actually get work done on the mac while playing an mp3, you'll probably want a G3 or higher.

I've found that my PB5300 can handle having a word processsor open along with Cabrio. It skips only occasionally when doing something disk intensive.
