Two words: Publicity Stunt.

Obama protester's rifle part of 'publicity stunt'
The protester carrying an AR-15 rifle outside President Barack Obama's speech in Phoenix on Monday staged the "publicity stunt" with the help of two local Libertarian groups that have worked with the man on Ron Paul's presidential campaign.

Before attending a pro-Obama health-care reform rally outside the Phoenix Convention Center, the man who identified himself as "Chris" met with members of RP4409 and Freedom's Phoenix. That's according to Freedom's Phoenix Publisher Ernest Hancock, who is credited with coining and designing the logo for the "Ron Paul r3VOLution."

In a YouTube video, Chris displays his semi-automatic rifle which he says "aids me in my resistance efforts."

"We will forcefully resist people imposing their will on us through the strength of the majority with a vote," Chris later tells an Obama supporter in the video. "Just because you sic the government on people doesn't make it morally OK to steal money from people. Taxation is theft."

Chris declined to reveal information about himself. Hancock said he is a Valley resident, an independent conservative and a John Birch Society member.

Chris, who also had a 9mm pistol, was one of a dozen demonstrators openly carrying firearms to the rally, a display that drew national media attention. Under Arizona law, openly carrying firearms in public is legal.

Hancock told CNN's Rick Sanchez on Tuesday that the gun display was planned well in advance. Hancock met with a Phoenix police officer last week, informing him that he and others in his group planned to bring firearms.

When Sanchez suggested many people would see it as a "publicity stunt," Hancock responded: "Absolutely.

Arizona is right to carry state. It is also a "shall issue" state. I'm sure there was more than the 10 "open carry" that were noted.

Chongo: it's ironic that that guy in your quote at the top of this page wants people to be afraid of how our liberties are being taken away, but his methods literally make me far more afraid of him than any politician. "We will forcefully resist people imposing their will on us through the strength of the majority with a vote", or in other words anarchy is a more direct and obvious threat to democracy than anything we are debating, and this would be true no matter who was elected.

There are ways of resisting policy in a democracy that don't involve shooting people with firearms or encouraging the use of force, not to mention more effective. The minute that some anti-Obama guy shoots some pro-Obama guy is the same minute that people stop listening to these people, and we should not over-estimate the intellect of people.

Here's a tip to you Republicans: if you want to use people like Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore as your punching bags, you should apply a safe distance from people like these town hallers, Limbaugh, etc. In other words, if you don't want your views associated and represented by these sorts of people (and I hope you don't), you should be very careful about associating our views with the far left with how you rant and direct your energies.

I extend my offer to Big Mac to all of you: tell us exactly and precisely what a typical and reasonable moderate lefter believes with an issue you care about, and without the editorial. I hate to put you on the defensive, but I honestly doubt you can. I doubt that many on the left really understand the moderate right well enough to do the same.

Shaddim: we have every much of a legal right to go to those events without putting ourselves at risk as he does carrying this thing. All it takes is anybody in that large crowd to pull his weapon and open fire, or some other incident occurring from this sort of provocative action and demonstration. Why should his legal rights trump the rights of everybody around him? This is not a gun show, but an event that ought to be suitable for people of all ages. Would you want your kid anywhere near some deranged dude with a gun like that?

Evidence? None. Probable cause? Plenty... it's not a terribly bright thing to do, and its also a very extreme thing to do with a lot of risk and a lot that can go horribly wrong.

It's legal, he was within his legal rights in Arizona. Also, no one was injured, unless you count the bitching, which likely irritated their throats. Suck it.

That doesn't make any sense, but then you rarely do.

You asked if people having guns was a defensive act. I don't know, is it? Go find out. Did you try to rob the guy? Assault him? Did you try breaking into his property? Harm any of his family? Go try to do so, and get back to us on how it goes.

i guess one can say robbing someone and breaking into someone's property can be done with a gun as well... i mean why would you do that without a gun?

Your loons? Like:
Lee Harvey Oswald
Sirhan Sirhan
Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme
Sara Jane Moore
Samuel Byck
Robert Pickett

Lefty loons have a long and sordid history of aiming firearms at politicians they don't like, and in quite a few cases, pulling the trigger. So yeah, most of us prefer your loons unarmed too. In fact, you can start with the most Democratic sections of ANY major city in the US. (Here in LA, that would be Compton, with more Democrats per square inch than any other section of the state, and a murder rate to match.)

Lefty loons with guns indeed.

besson3c- I dunno about the chicken dance, but Bush definitely crow like a Rooter. (But then again, doesn't everyone crow like a Rooter now and then?)

I thought Lee Harvey Oswald was a conservative?
Sirhan Sirhan was a hardcore conservative.
I don't know anything about Samuel Byck other than he tried to kill Nixon. That doesn't make him a liberal.
Robert Pickett was mentally ill.

Oswald "defected" to the USSR (where he met and married his wife Marina) and handed out pro Castro propaganda in New Orleans.

Sirhan Sirhan said he shot RFK because of his support for Israel in the Six Day War.

So are trying to say that committing armed acts of violence is a liberal trait? I'm confused?

We could make a list twice as long as conservatives who did the same sort of thing. Seems to me that the only common trait is that they are loons.

Jon Stewart made an interesting comparison last night.

Remember the folks who got kicked out of Bush speeches for wearing homemade anti-Bush shirts?

Yet it's ok to bring a gun to an Obama presidential speech.

Which is more threatening? You've got to be real cool to not let either bother you.

That's what I told the judge when I shot that pesky teenage kid who keeps coming to my yard and steal my peaches from my peach tree. Judge said I can't just shot a kid for throwing peaches at me. Damn you judge! That pesky kid had it coming for stealing my peaches. I was just defending my property, my precious peaches, and my pretty face from being disfigured by flying peaches.
