How difficult could it be?
You either Archive & install or format and install.

Is it so much more complciated than Jaguar?

Good point djjava... The PDF is a great idea, especially for switchers.

I have seen some awful data loss scenarios from people installing OS X over the last few years, just from people not being familiar with Mac things.

Archive install, clean install, selected items being installed etc etc. There is lots of room for confusion to the uninitiated...

I for example wouldn't know how to install Windows, and my only Linux install ever ended in the laptop being nearly thrown away... (very long and unhappy early mandrake experience...!)

once i get the email, and get home, i would be more than willing to host that pdf on my website's space for you, (i dont use it since the site will be shut down soon) but due to the school its from... I think they will just block my logins, i will assume that it will remain download-able for a long time.

So look at this thread later for a link to the pdf.

I give you permission to post it anywhere you want just make sure nothing is removed from the package. You may change the archive format from .tar too .zip to if you would like.

OK, Check your mailboxes I used my frontier account to send it to you. If I missed anyone let me know. There were two people that had PM me, and the addresses given did not go through.

All check it every few hours. Please give me feedback. I think I am going to keep improving upon it. A lot of people find it very helpful. Good luck, and if you need any additional help I have provided my contact information.

Remember as www.macfixit.com clearly stated this morning. Keep the 3rd parties off for a while. Things like MS Office and stuff will be fine, but your third parties could cause problems. Wait for the author to state its compatible with panther, or for an update.

Yes djava, you, my cousins, sister, and some online friends. Don't have a personal friend I know that owns a mac. They use PCs

By the way I also included an applescript that copies your bookmarks file for safari to the desktop. So it doesn't move it, but copies it. You should back this file up unless you want to have to add all your bookmarks again. I figured an applescript would be better than telling you where the file is. If you don't use safari email me and I can alter the script, and send you one. I will not include a restore script until I get my hands on panther. The directories could of changed slightly for all I know. So that is why.

Let me know if you dont know how to restore this file to your bookmarks. I will send you directions as soon as panther comes. So far my order is still open.

There is a small bug in the Safari bookmarks script. The work around for those who already downloaded it is to open the file called.

originals.tgz

then run the script in there.

I must of included the buggy copy. My fault. it wont cause any harm though so don't worry. In applescript it simply will stop if there are syntax errors.

Do you really think it's necessary to do a wipe of the hard disk? Isn't the archive and install option essentially doing the same thing, but without having to erase all of your other programs, etc?

I always format and clean install. IMO, it is better to start with a totally clean slate.

Can you wipe and install with the Up-to-Date CD's or is that option reserved for the full price CD's?

No offense intended (you know I'm going to offend when I start like that...!), but that document and the recommendations are about the most lame thing I've ever seen.

First, I found it slightly ironic that the author claimed copyright protection in the first sentence, but in the second or third sentence mentioned he ripped off all the photos from the Apple website. Hmmm.

Second, do a clean install? Jesus - why would anyone who actually uses their machine for work waste all that time? Every software manufacture crafts upgrade installs to ease the pain and time required to install a new version.

Do note that you're going to have to reinstall *all* of your applications if you wipe the hard drive and do a "fresh" install. I don't know how long that would take you, but it would take several hours for me.

You can prevent problems with the OS and stability issues and the like by not installing crappy software off the net...

Just my $0.02...
