Does the iPad have the equivalent of the Keychain in Mac OS X? I don't want to have to pay for 1Password if I don't have to.

No, but there are cheaper alternatives.
However, I'm a huge 1Password fan. Got it on my iPhone, iPad and desktops.
It's one of the must-have apps for me. I wouldn't switch to anything else.

1Password is worth every penny. I switched 18 months ago.

Mind you, iPhone OS does have the Keychain. It's just not exposed in the user interface very much. (Remember, the Keychain is a technology, not an application.)

On the iPad it is Safari, Setup, Auto fill, Names and passwords.
1password pro is to $$ for me.
