how do you do this in Jaguar? I cant seem to find the option.
Ive looked through screen effects and desktop prefs as well as many other places. i cant seem to find it.
i dont have a QE compatible system. is that why?

It's not a direct option, you can find the trick on www.macosxhints.com (one line to type in the terminal) and there's an app called XDesk (or something like that) which can do that for you.

There are several apps that allow you to use a screensaver as a desktop. Check out the "screensavers" section of OS X apps at Versiontracker. I use xBack. It's simple, unobsttrusive and lets you switch screensavers on the fly from the menu bar.

Before Jaguar, this feature was good more for novelty than anything else. Now it works without any hit to GUI performance, especially with a really fast videocard.
