In light of the recent announcement that 600 Starbucks would be closing ... is one closing near you? Two in my area are closing, including the one I frequent most. ;-(

Starbucks tests promotions across US: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance
"SEATTLE (AP) -- Starbucks Corp. is testing several types of promotions in stores across the country, a move it hopes will help counter the decline in domestic store traffic that led to a decision to close 600 stores."

Starbucks is hugely overpriced, so I wouldn't be surprised if they'd have to close some of their stores. They don't do that here afaict though.

If I am lucky, all of the Starbucks nearby would be closing. High prices and coffee that claims to be fair trade, but isn't.
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

Nope, they are opening them here as fast as they can build them. Over 100 now in HK alone.

Luckily, we don't have that many starbucks in my area in brooklyn. One of the few places in the world where there are actually non-Starbucks coffee shops that are much nicer and fun to be in. Does Starbucks have free wifi yet? Last time I was in there they wanted $10 for access so I never went back. Most of the other places are free and its pretty sad at this point not to have free wifi in a coffee shop.

Unfortunately, we have only 3 starbucks's in the Netherlands, all at Amsterdam airport. Nike has a starbucks in their office too, but it's only for employees.

I like starbucks coffee. They have cinnamon.

I agree that starbucks is for the most part over priced and they're now feeling the pinch of a slowing economy. People are less willing to spend 4+ dollars for a cup of joe but they're not completely over-priced.

My closest "Starbucks" isn't closing, it's in my kitchen, and I'm the barista.

In fact they appear to be opening a new one near me. Bear in mind, there are already two within two blocks of this new one.

I have been to Starbucks less than five times in my life. And only because they were the only places available within a walking distance and I didn't have a car with me.

For this reason it is good that a few stores are closing. It will allow competition to enter certain markets.

Thank god. I'm not sure if they'll be closing in Canada yet, but I wouldn't be surprised.. i'd much prefer Tim Horton's coffee anyway. Starbucks tastes burnt.

One just opened in my town around August last year. The only time I've been in one is at a Barnes & Noble, which I think is excusable.

Seems like the ones around here are staying open. I have one about 300 yards from my work that I hope keeps on keepin' on.

There are three within 5 minutes of my home. I love their espresso, hate the stores, so I wouldn't mind seeing one of these close (especially the one with the snotty manager and dipstick employees).

There are five within a ten minute walk of my home (one a whole block north of me) and I doubt any of them are closing.

Actually, Sonic's java chillers are pretty much the best coffee-based drink that I've had in a long time.

I doubt that. It seems like most of them are located in the East coast. I kinda agree as Starbucks coffee in NYC tasted like crap compared to those in the Seattle area. There is no Dunkin' Donuts Coffee or Coffee Bean in this area, so pretty much Starbucks, Tully's, Seattle Best Coffee (owned by SBUX), and a couple Peet's stores.

Who cares. (OK, I know some of you do, but not sure why)

The good news is that we will be getting our first Tim Hortons soon, and it is on my way to work.

Sorry for the dumb question - how do you know which stores are closing? I go once every week or two - not necessarily to the same store. Haven't seen any signs or anything in the past couple weeks.

I'm with sek.

In East Asia, people only drink coffee with mountains of whipped cream and caramel sauce and fuçkin' chocolate sprinkles and vanilla essence so that when you go in to ask for a black espresso they're like, and have to call the manager out to explain.

And I'm not kidding.

I hate Starbucks. This is karma for their crap and overpriced coffee and tacky cafes full of pseudo-art and sham atmospheric music.

Tim Horton's had the distinct honor of being the entity that brought the emerald ash beetle into mid Michigan when they built a store in Owosso, Michigan. All ash trees within 10 miles had to be cut down and burned.

Well, I live next to the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica where there is literally a Starbucks on every corner for four blocks.

Something tells me they could afford to lose a couple, or three.

I'm not a regular coffee drinker so I don't have a Starbucks that I call my own. As long as some are here and there, that's cool. They do serve a purpose. And it's not like all the closed down stores are going to be bought out by mom and pop java joints anyways.

How's Starbucks coffee overpriced? They might set the price *benchmark*, but other coffee places charge more or about the same as Starbucks.

Yeah, generally in my experience, cheaper coffee (at least in Washington) is pretty much terrible. And Starbucks isn't as expensive as Cutter's Point.

I go to two different stores relatively regularly, one about 3 miles from home and one near school (not IN school-that's a different chain). They're both in good locations and they're both doing well.

As for "overpriced," when you just look at brewed coffee prices by similar cup sizes, Starbucks is very competitive with places like McDonalds, Seattle's Best, and just about any other place you can get brewed coffee, and I think their coffee is much better than McDonalds' (and on a par but different from Seattle's Best). Fancy coffee drinks and "not-coffee" drinks are NOT coffee, and so it's hard to say "they price their coffee too high" if you're just looking at mochas and lattes.

I'm still laughing over people calling Tim Horton's coffee "good." I mean, I have a large regular Tim's pretty much every morning, but I fully recognize that it's **** coffee that tastes like water. It's so popular in Canada only because it's got a bland, generic taste that anyone who doesn't like coffee can enjoy (see: the double-double in a medium coffee, yech).

McDonald's actually has pretty good coffee to be honest. Much better than Timmy's anyway. Very tasty, considering the price and location.

That depends on the restaurant, not the chain's capability. Mickey D's coffee in consistent restaurants is consistently above average (and WAY above average "office coffee"), but if you frequent a franchise that isn't 100% consistent with everything, it's most likely that something like coffee will be the first casualty.

I visit Starbucks for coffee when I'm not at home. School days are a biggie—I have a cup at home, and then pick up another at the Starbucks near campus. But the point is that I don't depend on them for my coffee. I pay a premium for Gevalia coffee, which, if brewed with moderate care and attention (clean coffee maker, right proportions, filtered water) is really, really good stuff. That's what I drink daily, and the quality of the brew is all up to me (or my wife), not some corporate formula that says "stronger is better" or something like that. I like Seattle's Best a lot too, and when I start my first internship in the fall, I'll be getting my second cup from a Seattle's Best kiosk at the hospital I'll be working at. Similar prices, very good coffee, very conveniently located.

there a two on the same intersection and another one a mile down the road on the same street. There are another two in a Fry's(Kroger's) and a Safeway in the same vicinity. There was one in an Albertson's that closed. There is a Starbucks and an Einstein's Bagels next door to each other in the same parking lot

I would love to invest on a solid espresso machine at home. Right now, I have a Senseo and a no-frills espresso machine. The thing is most of the time I am not at home, so I just cannot fully unitize a proper espresso machine.

Coffee at work is okie, but I always enjoy taking a walk to Starbucks and get something else.

Starbucks also begins to offer more promitions.
