Any variation of iMac, iPhone, iPod, etc, that is incorrectly capitalised. Replace it with the correct version.

Please? I'm fairly sure the bb software is capable of this.

It should be able to, I know of one forum that certain words are actually changed to completely other ones to deter certain subjects of discussion.

Why? So people care even less about how they spell things? No way.

MAC, iMAC, etc -> Warn once. Ban next time.

It seems a little heavy handed, but I certainly wouldn't mind, either.

Personally I think its a little heavy handed. Why stop there, why not add a filter to rewrite someone's post and correct all spelling and grammar errors. If I type imac, Instead of iMac who cares and maybe I prefer using the word imac instead - I'm just saying

Besides, auto-replace filters produce clbuttic errors.

Thanks, tooki. It took me a while to fit "clbuttic" into the proper space for my poor little brain to understand it. Now I feel that I am a better person for this piece of new and insightful information.

On the other hand, I am sick and tired of the countless accidental or naive misspellings like "MAC" and "Imac", "IPHONE", "Iwhatever", and the follow-on "corrections" from our beloved members. The accidents are one thing, but the "helpful" corrections are what trouble me most. They are not just corrections, but rather opportunities for established members to act superior and condescending.

Maybe we need a "better than you" filter too...

They're not accidents. They're demonstrations of a person's unwillingness to actually read a forum before they participate in it.

What makes it worse is that it's almost universally done by people with the expectation of assistance.

I'd agree with you except for my experience that many, if not most of such accidents are made by people who are obviously very enthusiastic about adopting a computing platform that is completely new to them. That sort of enthusiasm is a Good Thing, and acting like they're idiots instead of simply ignorant paints Mac users, or at least our members, as people who aren't interested in tolerance or helping people become more informed. That in particular is what bugs me most about the kinds of responses our members post. If it's someone who's made a few posts already, that's one thing, but coming down hard on someone's first or second post because he or she doesn't type well or is in so much of a hurry that he/she doesn't get capitalization of certain names correct is just plain rude.

I should point out that a LOT of our members are apparently unfamiliar with the Shift key in general, and don't bother with capitalizing ANYTHING, punctuating, building paragraph structure that helps the reader understand a post, etc. It's disingenuous to be rough on a newb for typing IMac and not be rough on an established user who doesn't capitalize apple, ipod or anything else.

Just to be clear, I don't think being high and mighty about is is the proper solution, and I absolutely agree that you shouldn't step on people's enthusiasm.

Now, people with poor grammar, there's a reason to feel superior.

Edit: Yet, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out we both pulled the e. e. cummings routine with our nicks.

Hmm...so what you're saying is that it's possible that someone would talk in this manner as a joke because we all know how ridiculous it is...but who would do something like that? Who is lame enough to think that continuing on in that manner would be funny or clever?

I feel no need to explain. I suppose I shouldn't enjoy anything, it seems like anytime I make an attempt at a joke, no matter what, you seem to take offense.

Such as this non-sentence?

(I forget—what’s the name of the law that states that anyone pointing out other people’s bad grammar will necessarily immediately commit grammar faux-pas themselves?)

I am crap with my grammer, but, for the most part, people can understand me.

It is when a sentence becomes HARD to read due to incorrect grammer/spelling then it pisses on my battery.

Uh-oh, someone's reeling from his botched grammar commentary.

It's called slang. And of you want to continue on the path of anality, I recommend you get tutored by Oisín, because you suck at it.

No, I actually remembered that one as a particularly creative use of the apostrophe. It's like fingernails on a blackboard, for me.

So shortening "was not" to "wasn't" or "is not" to "isn't" is writing for effect?

Edit: Wow. Apparently now if you make an all-uppercase reply to a quoted post, it turns both the reply and the entire quoted post into all-lowercase. How, er, useful.
