Try to go to BuyMusic.com w/ Safari. You get this message...
In order to take full advantage of BuyMusic.com's offerings you must be on a Windows Operating System using Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher.
Interesting... no? I guess they're sick of all the crap we've been giving them.

That's not true. I went to BuyMusic.com a few times in their first day, and the entire site was available to and visible to Mac users.

They can't really do that, and you are incorrect.

All worked, change thread title

DON'T change the title.
Tried it on MacOS X/Safari and Windows/Mozilla. Both failed.

Unless it blocks all non-ms browsers the thread title is wrong and should be changed.

Hmm, I was able to go the first day with no problem. No go, now. I'll try Lynx. That worked. But I can't search. And I'm bored.

The fact that it works with some non-IE browsers implies that they might actually be blocking certain specific browsers instead of just everything but IE. Weird. And damn annoying.

Check out the javascript, the comment even says "//IE5+ required, netscape, macs, and opera are not supported". And the script looks for anything that says netscape, mac, or opera and sends them to the ierequired.htm page, then it checks to see if the user agent is less than 5. Lynx works because of the lack of javascript.
Disable javascript, or change your browser's user agent string if you want to look through the site (it wasn't that way on the first day, as people have mentioned).

LOL! I think its hilarious. What would they gain from blocking certain machines/software? Doesn't it seem a bit... well, childish? After reading reports from other MacNN users, I don't think I'm missing much...

You're right. The only reason to view it is the same reason people look at car wrecks: Its sick and twisted but people love gore and destruction.

I agree.
It's interesting to note how PC users always act like Apple is so irrelevant but they seem sure to spend a fair amount of energy proving that's not so.

Yeah, well I'm loving this because they just shot 30%-50% of their potential buyers (remember that doesn't just include mr home user that uses DELL but linux and bsd users as well!!!!)
Anyone who uses sco unix, bsdi, freebsd, openbsd, redhat linux, mandrake linux, (thinks).. any other variety of *n?x, and of course, amiga OS (probably os4)..
got blocked too. Realize that these people account for a fat deal of technically literate users out there.. you take them away and suddenly it's not so easy.
I have no confidence at all that the normal home user can sucessfully buy music and a place like buymusic.com will only scare them away with their rediculous licensing system.
I'm wondering if they just want to leave a nasty taste in enough people's mouths to kill the market for everyone else (including apple because when itunes comes for windows it seems like it might not be as popular thanks to the bad reputations buymusic is going to give out)

BuyMusic appears to be highly dependent on Microsoft technology. It uses ActiveX controls, .NET servers, Windows Media DRM, and all kinds of other proprietary Microsoft stuff.
I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft developed the whole complete package and they're planning to sell it several companies.

Requires Windows Media 9 Series.
Which requires Internet Explorer for Windows for the time being.
Try viewing the iTunes Music Store with a browser that isn't Safari-based.
You can't.
Goes both ways.

You can't view the iTMS with any browser, since it isn't web-based. iTunes is using QuickTime to render the Music Store.

Which is rendered using the Safari browser built into Mac OS X.
It ain't QuickTime. If it were, the iTunes Music Store would be available for Windows and Classic Mac OS now.

iTunes doesn't use the Safari browser for the music store as proven by the lack of WebCore.framework in the iTunes bundle.

As far I as I can tell, iTunes Music Store does not use Apple's WebCore (Safari) framework. iTunes 4 was released weeks before the beta of Safari that turned the Safari engine into a framework for the OS...
Instead, iTunes uses its own XML browser. Its an XML interface, believe it or not.
http://www.tnl.net/blog/2003/5/5#App...dtheMusicStore
Finally, your point that if it were Quicktime, it would have been released on Windows already is doubtful. The task of making iTunes Music available on Windows is not totally technical. Indeed, most of Apple's pieces (Quicktime, the iPod, AAC decoding) are already in place on Windows. Instead, most of Apple's hurdles are purely from a licensing standpoint. At last notice, only 2 of the major record companies agreed to the same deal as on the Mac with a Windows version. Negotiations with these record companies again are where this thing is slowing down.
And once again, don't hold your breath on iTunes Music for classic mac os. Apple hasn't updated iTunes since version 2.0 on Mac OS 9, and they sure as heck won't make the jump to 4.0 to enable the store.

Wait Apple garunteed it before the end of the year, but then didn't even have it all worked out? That's kinda lame... hope it all works out and Apple doesn't turn out to be the high profile unwilling puppet of the labels...

Sure would be nice if Apple, aol TIME WARNER, and Opera all sued Buymusic.com.
However, I doubt it.
