Is it bad to use the prog "InsomniaX" to let me use my MB while the lid is closed or if i want to leave it on all night, with the lid closed?

I don't see why. I use my macbook pro all the time with the lid closed, with an external display, keyboard and wireless mouse. Sometimes I leave it on for weeks like that. I do use an aluminum chill plate under the MBP though, as it tends to get really hot.

Do you both have the first gen MB/MBP or the core 2 duo?

I use my MacBook Core Duo 2Ghz closed fairly often with an external keyboard, mouse, and DVI display. No problems here.

I would run it with the lid open to allow heat to dissipate easier, probably easier on the components, increase life, etc.

As far as I know as soon as you connect external screen and keyboard you can close it and wake it up using your external keyboard ..

Yes, if power is also attached that will work.

I use my MacBook every day for about 10 hours (it's my work machine) with the lid closed and attached to a 20" monitor - never had a single heat-related issue.

I have used my MB for hours in closed-lid mode. Just as I do with my MBP and the PBs I used before.
People, Apple endorses closed-lid mode. Even if your precious MB would melt due to closed-lid mode it would be covered by Apple's warranty. The MB was made to be used. Use it.

Week 20 here, I use mine closed all the time. Unless I'm playing WoW or watching a DVD, fan usually doesn't come on. Runs like a charm.

If the extra heat did cause a problem, it would probably be with the disk. Heat is supposed to reduce their lifetime. It would have to get real hot for that to be an issue. Over 120F/ 50C for hours every day, I'd say.

doesn't leaving the MB plugged in and running all day decrease the life of the battery?
for the guys who use closed lid 10+ hours per day - how is your battery life?
|
Dual 2 Ghz G5
20" Cinema Display
500 Mhz Snow iBook (aka portable dvd player)
10 Gig, Rev 1b iPod
iSight
No More Money :(

No. As long as you go through one aggregate battery cycle per month, the life won't be impact any more than any other usage pattern.

It's basically up to you. If you're OK with cycling the battery roughly once every month, that will do. If you don't feel like doing that, you will be buying a new battery after about 18-24 months.
