Samsung could be expanding its retail efforts in the future, with potential help reportedly coming from a senior Apple Store designer. The telecoms arm of the electronics producer in the United States has allegedly tapped Tim Gudgel to create its own full retail stores, as the company looks to expand from its current store-within-a-store concept it currently operates inside Best Buy outlets.

Two sources of The Information made the claim about the new Samsung hire, though it is noted that it is not an absolute sign that Samsung will proceed with the endeavor. Considering Gudgel specializes in store design and planning, and worked for Gehry Partners under architect Frank Gehry, such a hire would give Samsung a considerable advantage in creating the architecture of their retail outlets, or at least for a future remodeling of its store-within-a-store efforts,

A move into a full retail outlet has already been performed by Samsung, albeit in a limited manner, though unlike Apple and Microsoft, it has not done so in the US. The company currently has a total of 36 store-within-a-store locations in Canada, along with a number of "Samsung Experience" stores in other locations around the world.

The pundits laughed when Apple announced plans to open retail stores, remember? Actually Samsung stores make more sense than Microsoft's attempt. They actually have a product line (of their own, that is). How close will Samsung try to place their physical stores to Apple. That could only benefit Apple, IMHO.

Based on the existing Samsung stores, the derogatory nickname "Same-sung" rings especially true.
