A friend who is fairly new to macs has bought an iBook G3 600 off eBay and wants me to help him set it up. It has 10.2 on it, so I was wondering if 10.4 would be ok on it, or would 10.3 be best?

I ran Tiger 10.4.5 on a 500 MHz G3 iBook and it ran very well. I would recommend Tiger if your friend is going to use things like Spotlight and Dashboard. However, if he/she isn't into widgets or anything like that, Panther 10.3.9 should be fine as well.

I'd say run Tiger and disable Dashboard. Dashboard's too much of a hog on an older machine.

But I say Tiger because it's quicker than Panther, has better features and better integration between apps.

i gotta agree with lateralus...your friend doesnt need dashboard or spotlight if he's gettin such an old computer as is. 10.3.9 is plenty fast and less of a load on an older machine.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

Tiger for Safari RSS and Spotlight. You can disable Dashboard if desired.

Panther would be the best, Tiger uses too much memory, even for my Powerbook G4.

If he is using 10.2, upgrade to Tiger... there is no reason to go out of your way to buy/steal an older OS when Tiger doesn't use much more RAM.

I'm using Tiger on my 733 G4 and it runs perfectly. No way I would go back to Panther.

I agree with production_coordinator, I am using a iBook G3 500 with 512MB of RAM, and it runs great. OS is smooth, and seems pretty snappy...... but not compared to my 17"PB..... but that would be an unfair comparison.
