BTW: It's interesting to see how open minded the crowd at winbeta appears to be about pirating.

The IE screenshot says it all, some buttons are huge while other more important functions get a tiny icon, however it's way too early say anything meaningful about longhorn or it's GUI...

Oh my god. It's hideous. Kind of makes my concerns about brushed metal or the slight change to the finder face icon seem unimportant.

windows makes my head hurt

http://www.winbeta.org/winbeta/eleme...tup.Screen.jpg
"Perform additional tasks" implies I'll be doing the first as well...

http://www.winbeta.org/winbeta/eleme...roduct.Key.jpg
The numbering on the example could be seen as being comprised of 41 digits...

http://www.winbeta.org/winbeta/eleme...stallation.jpg
What is the relation between 1) the computer&monitor icon to "express upgrade" and 2) the windows logo&refresh arrow to "clean installation"?...

http://www.winbeta.org/winbeta/eleme...DC-Desktop.gif
interesting theme called "slate," more interestingly inspired by brushed metal (beautiful gradient btw)...

http://www.winbeta.org/winbeta/eleme...ktop.Clock.gif
the clock icon is nice, though i think that's because it has the whole new aqua-rounded button thing going on...

It's two years until release. It's a beta. It's windows. Of course it sucks.

We can still laugh at their blind UI-designers fumbling through dark with dull crayons. Pfft.

At first I was impressed.

Then I sat and looked at it and started thinking, ya know.. they should mess with this..

first make that titlebar smaller, second fix IE because it looks like a mess the buttons the way they are, then, you change those widgets, they are ugly and don't fit with the new theme.

Perhaps in the theme itself make the window background a bit deeper and less pinkish, then make the dialog buttons smoother.

But then I thought, only after looking at it again..

of ALL the attempts MS has had at making a GUI, this is the tackiest and lousiest of them all. I mean, they had it with the windows 98 GUI, simple and to the point, the original xp one (think watermark or whatever) was AWESOME, and they REALLY should have stuck to that.

But did they? NO! They had to make it ugly.

This is bad, the orange/blue fade is awful, good god who taught these people how to make a GUI?

Oh and the default background.. is.. very depressing. Not to mention the taskbar is nothing new. KDE has been using a dock now for years, why doesn't microsoft admit they were stupid and join the club?

Come on, to me it just look like someone spend a day using photoshop...
Why would they write "... Microsoft Windows Code Name "Longhorn". " instead of "M$ Windown Longhorn"? That just seems way too stupid.

But hey, it would not be the first time, that company have made somthing stupid...

Moderator: I dunno about you, but panther is rather decently done. The grey surface is a nice textured metal, the usual is plain, but NOT TOO plain (lines are nice I think) <-- took time to get used to

While I think the colors on the widgets in OS X should be just a tad different shade, otherwise I have no complaints. It's simple, clean, and.. works. Sure grey or blue scrollbars might look noisy but it FITS, most of all it looks gracefuland clean, unlike those funky things in windows.

The word here is SLICK.OS X and graphite are VERY slick, OS X and blue is rather slick. Windows is the equivilent of a 1999 honda civic compared to a mclaren F1 in terms of design.

If this wasn't the same company that came up with the terrible blue for the standard windows theme, I might be inclined to agree. But I don't have much confidence that this is just some midway point that will be completely reworked. Take a look at the explorer window.

http://www.winbeta.org/winbeta/eleme...t.Explorer.gif

No version of the Mac OS (beta or otherwise) ever looked like that. It's a mess of clashing icon sizes, placement and colors.

Longhorn will launch, people will be lined up to buy it... they will install it, and fall in love with it...

The difference between Mac users and Windows users is that Mac users constantly question the OS, it's applications and GUI. Windows users don't.

CASE and POINT: I went to my friends house with my Cannon S400. I took some cool bar shots and wanted to download them to his computer. He has USB so I plugged my camera in. I got a driver window or something. After 10 or so minutes of f@#$ing around and downloading a drivers from Cannon, the thing still didn't work. He gave up, and blamed Cannon for not having good drivers.

I blamed M$ and his computer manufacturer.

Apple can't play the blame game because they make the whole widget.

Someone over at NeoWin has done a XP theme based on the leaked Longhorn 'slate' look. I put it on my PC here. What it really it reminds me of is the old 'Pro' theme that Apple came up with for Copland.

Ya know, windows longhorn's GUI reminds me of what happens to your voice when you go through puberty...

Really tho. I showed people screencaps of that and they -WANTED- it, scary thing was they WANTED it a LOT.

I don't get it. Glossy black with smooth black (plasticky start button), with slick white and black but yet colors everywhere (is it going to be monochrome or bright color?) And boy this just goes on and on and on. It's like they're trying to do what apple did with the graphite theme but they can't make up their mind whether they want graphite or aqua.

Beta? Yes. They'll probably read our forums and decide on some uglier theme before the OS ever hits the market.

The sad thing is when the whole thing lands on the table:

People accept MS, people like MS, and people think MS started, and will end, the computer world.

That said, this OS won't be released for another 2 years. Panther ALREADY gives it's 'advertised hype' a run for the money if you ask me. Unless apple pulls an 'apple' then the OS 2 years from now SHOULD blow the new longhorn out of the water.

Then again it IS microsoft marketing. Knowing them it will get people to love MS

They love M$ cuz it makes money, and whatever makes $ must be trustworthy, no? In the eyes of the flock, you go with the flow.

They don't care about brushed metal and swish effects and wavey menu bars, and such finer details of life (or even a stable OS for that matter). They care about $$$ and success and if they felt Steve-O Ballmer (gaaah) is trustworthy, hell they could even elect him prez.

Isn't that what happened to Arny Schwartz-a-weeny? The guy's got the intellect of a frozen frog in mid-january Manitoba! But he's got $$$ and pays 100k a year a guy to spitshine his f*ckin' hubcaps. So he represents power and we won't worry cuz he got big muscles and he kicked the crap outta mean robots in movies... I present to you: the power of pop-culture.

Wait till the next IE for Winblows comes out and users'll need to confirm (via pop up windows) they actually do want to load embedded stuff (such as flash movies) from the sites they're visiting. They'll suffer.

Praise the Lord for Safari, that's for sure.

Actually, Apple should develop more "teaser" software for Winblows, just like iTunes... maybe Safari?

I wonder if Apple would have had a problem with the Mac OS 8 scroll bars and other widgets in XP/Longhorn if they were still supporting Classic?

Pretty soon we'll have Mac OS X 12.6 and Windows will look like Mac OS 8 and claiming to have conquered innovation.
