I have a new iMac DV and am having trouble with my connect speed. I found a few modem scripts on the Internet that will get me to 38,400 (With Apple supplied script was only 28,800). Anyone else with this problem. I went thru Apple and my ISP to no avail(checked control panels, trashed preferences, etc ) I even thought it was the modem and took the machine in for an exchange but the new machine did the same thing. It is not line noise - my PowerBase connects thru the same line reliably at 52-53K.Help!

you need to try some new modem scripts: http://www.busprod.com/watchenman/mo...et%20show.html

ftp://ftp.pasoftware.com/pub/iMacNon-Flaw.sea.bin

for earthlink ISP: http://help.earthlink.net/techsuppor...a_scripts.html

for GV modems: http://www.accesscom.com/~nchinn/scripts.html

also try the Apple Modem Script Generator: http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n10664

and read these TIL articles: http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n24482
http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n24803

I have one other iMac modem script, I can't remember where it came from... if you want it, email me and I will send it to you.

I used to be able to connect at 48K or so, but lately only 38K or so. What do you think happened. Also, can you tell me exactly what a modem script is, and where do I put it once I download it? Thanks.

I'm not a pro on modem scripts or anything, but my best guess is they are just a initialation string that tells the modem what to look for in the connection - ya know some technical stuff er somethin' . . .

After you download a modem script, just unstuff it and drop it into the 'Modem Scripts' folder which is in your extentions folder. Then go into your modem control panel and select the new script. They're all in the drop down by 'modem'.

I had trouble with constant disconnects from Earthlink, and after visiting their modem script page and downloading the new script, i've only had two or three disconnects in the 10 or 15 hours online since then, compared to about 2 or 3 an hour (thanks, wlonh!).

You think after all this time they would have
fixed this modem problem since they released
the iMac,I'm thinking of getting a externl
USR since the iMac one also likes to drop
carrier to much..

Well, here's the REAL answer, after weeks of troubleshooting a brand new iMac DVSE, checking all the other Forums with messages of MANY other iMac owners with the same exact problem, Finally, trying two different ISPs and multiple POPs for each, many modem scripts, the internal modem only rarely ever broke 28.8, and when it does it always disconnected no matter what settings were. HOWEVER, a Global Village USB EXTERNAL modem installed in the SAME iMac DVSE, using the SAME TCP/IP and PPP settings, using the SAME phone cord attached to the SAME jack and calling the SAME numbers NEVER FAILS to connect at 47 Kbps or better, and NO disconnects. (Just as my old Mac 7100/external 3COM modem always connected great and NEVER disconnected)
Try an external Global Village USB modem...Outpost.com has a 30 day easy return policy....
Being a long time Mac supporter, and seeing how MANY other iMac owners are going through the same exact experience, the sad conclusion is we bought a great computer with a shoddy internal modem...

Let me know where I can score the above scrips you mention. Thanks MacBoy

I have located a modem script "Earthlink Network Script", put it in the "Modem Scripts" folder in the Preferences folder (in the System folder). My iMac DV now says it connects at 57,6000 every time. No dropped connections. I think this is probably a bogus report of connection speed, but downloads come at around 5K/sec fairly frequently which is comparable to my GV Teleport External on my PowerBase clone machine. I use Earthlink and do not know if it will work with other ISPs (doubtful).

You might want to try this link, and see what
you're connection speed is really doing.

The ELN script causes bogus speed reports, but sometimes does help out the connection speed.

I take it the Apple Internal 56k script didn't perform as expected?
