Any ideas of a free service for uploading files that is easy to send/copy a link off to others to download the file. So far I have not had too much luck.

humyo.com - Free Online Data Storage & Backup Space looked nice but would be good to send a link to someone so that they just have to type in a guest user/password to grab the file and not get prompted to signup when they go to grab the file.

I need to share files back and forth with a few people. We are working on a project and just trying to find a free simple solutions. 1GB of space is fine. I see lots of sites that offer 2, 4, & 6GB of space for free, but just don't seem very user friendly.

Any ideas, thatnks.

I'm looking for the same service that I could set up per file user authentication for.

I use xdrive.com and bluestring.com I like bluestring more but my main gripe is I fail to see how to password protect files, check them out.

I use box.net exactly for that. I can upload files and send direct download links. I think that you can get 1GB for free, but there is a 30mb file size limit. I forget what I pay, but it isn't much for 5GB and no size limit. It has been invaluable to myself and my wife in her graphic design work. I may be wrong about the sizes and limits, it has been some time since I last looked.

if one of the people needing to share files already has their own domain, why not use that service?

i realize you want to email links and have the user click to download but...

for example, i'm with lunarpages and simply use ftp. it is fast and has username/password protection. they have unlimited number of FTP accounts in their basic plan and plenty of storage/data transfers per month.

if you already have a domain, why not use it? and if you really want email links/clicks you can use a web page script do that.

Most computer novices don't know how to use FTP.

Hmm.... this may do in a snap
YouSendIt - Send large files - transfer delivery - FTP Replacement
was talking to someone here at work that uses it a lot to send files to clients. Will do up to 100mb, will send an email to everyone you want an email sent to that has a direct link to the file. But removes files after a certain amount of time. Can see what is offered in the free account Compare Accounts | YouSendIt

Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire

I used Xdrive for a while, but sometimes files would quit out in the middle of uploading.

You can upload .zip files to xdrive, maybe you have tried it only with bluestring?

Seconding YouSendIt. I've been using it for several years. Quick and easy. No problems, ever.

Just signed up. Will come in handy to transfer large files. Tried to upload a test video to send to a friend to realize that it will not take .mov so had to create a .zip of it but think for the 100mb or less files will go with yousendit.com unless another site that does a similar setup with it's files/notification.

I like this site.
Testing it now to see how fast it uploads/downloads files.
Even has it's own satellite application for the desktop.

I use mediafire as well and am quite happy. There is a 100 mb limit per item.
