The Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth in 1620... that's 385 years. 
If you take 1776 as the date we became a country, then the U.S. as it's own country has been around for 229 years. If you take 1787 as the date, then the U.S. has been around for 218.
Many people came over from England to escape some of the religous persecution of those days, and it was well before 1776.

I study European history in university here. It was their claim they left England because of persecution. The truth is they were the ones making the trouble and went to America to start a Puritan society. There in New England and Boston they recruited young men to go to England and to fight the Royalists. The Royalists had done nothing to start the trouble. It all started with Puritans trying to destablise the country because they wanted the Protestant church to remove any similarity to Catholicism, even though there was no link to the Church of Rome. The Puritans were Bible bashing maniacs with conspiracy theories that resulted in violence. They acted in those times just like Al-Qaeda today, using foreign base to recruit terrorists and then say they were persecuted 'rebels'. They had a sermon, New England's Tears for Old England's Fears. Very Bin Ladin like talk.
Their attitude still exists today in the Christian Right of America. The whole shouting and Bible bashing, it all goes back to Puritans who thought they can change the world with war and shape countries by changing regimes.

Blatent waste of time, money, and effort. Unbelievable. Not guilty on all counts. Michael Jackson did everything he could to ruin his chances and in spite of himself, the system works if you have a few million dollars. Is there a different system we could lean to for more justice? I think all the people that prosecuted this case including that Sneddon guy who searched his place etc...should be sued and imprisoned by Jackson for not being able to close on this one. Just plain foolish waste of resources. Now even though he's been found innocent, no one believes him and now they should all be sued for slander and deformation of character.
