What's the difference between CS & Elements 3.0?

Having unsuccessfully tried to get a copy of CS on eBay, I've started looking at Elements 3. How much of a stripped down version is it and would it be a better buy for a beginner or should I keep hunting for CS?

Hunt for CS2 Premium, get someone with an education discount to buy it for you at a mere $384.
Or you can stick to pirating it? I do not recommend it.

I definately don't want a pirate version, but on the flipside I don't know anyone with an educational discount. Besides, if I get a educational version, I can't use it for commercial purposes...

Aye, not an educational VERSION... the Premium version, at a student discount. But in that case, nevermind.

Student discount= non-commercial license, always.
Unless you order some CD-R from Russia, then:
OEM= illegal license.

As with my Studio MX dilema, it's kinda resolved itself - a friend gave me an unregistered new copy of Photoshop 6.0 in exchange for a few odds & ends and given it's only (!) £150 to upgrade to CS2, I'll go for it.
