Has the update fixed this for other people? I haven't updated yet.

This just started happening to me after 10.3.6 update. I also just got an Airport Express, but I think it was doing it before I got the airport.

Anyone know the DNS IPs of the airport express?

The reason this is happening is one of the root zone dns servers has changed it's configuration and is sending AAAAA out instead of A

To fix this just turn off ipv6 and you should be golden. For the technically minded, edit /etc/hostconfig and make the YES for ipv6 a NO

This was discussed in another thread on the customization forums if anyone wants to go look there.

Post if this worked or not.

^^ nope, still there. i went from "automagically" to "off" in the ipv6 pref.

no logout though, but now is not really the time for that. i also have a habit of opening up a shitton of tabs all at once as soon as safari loads.

I straight edited /etc/hostconfig, maybe I was wrong about the system prefs thing.

the following worked for me and no hacks needed

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++

IPv6 is a new version of the Internet protocol (IP). At present, IPv6 is used primarily by some research institutions. Most computers do not need to set up or use IPv6.

IPv6 provides more IP address space for Internet users than the current standard, IPv4. You can connect to an IPv6 address from a computer using IPv4 by setting up a "6 to 4" network port configuration.

To set up a "6 to 4" network port configuration:
1._ Open System Preferences and click Network.
2._ Choose Network Port Configurations from the Show pop-up menu and click New.
3._ Choose "6 to 4" from the Port pop-up menu, and give the configuration a name like "6 to 4"
4._ If you were given a relay address, choose Manually from the Configure pop-up menu and enter it. Otherwise, leave the Configure pop-up menu set to Automatic.

now check the check box to turn it on. you can drag the configs to the order you want them tried when connecting to a network.

I tried all the suggestions, including entering in manually the DNS servers, logging out, then to a diff account, quit Safari, reopen it, log back in, turning off IPv6, both in sys prefs, and in hostconfig, etc, etc, etc. And it's still doing it for me. It did not do this before 10.3.6 for me.

Still no fix. At least none of these "fixes" worked for me.

Grrr. Had 5 straight days when this problem didn't happen once. Now it happens all the time.

/shakes fist at Apple doing nothing

I'm still running 10.3.5 as I'm too nervous to go to 10.3.6 (and I hear that doesn't fix it anyway).

It's not jjust Safari either, IE and FireFox do the same, then suddenly the web works again. What a great security update that was Apple...

Been happening on both my Powerbooks for awhile now, in both 10.3.5 and 10.3.6. Both running out-of-the-box OS X installs, nothing hacked or tweaked. Am behind an Airport Express base station.

Most definitely not Safari-exclusive, as same problem occurs in Camino, Firefox and even ssh from shell. None of the fixes proposed so far have worked for me.

I've also just found another strange problem.

I can access this site:

on IE but no matter how often I try to connect, I can't get onto it in Safari!!
Hi there schuey100,
I'm also on Airport Extreme, via a Netgear DG834G wireless router, and I have no problem accessing www.olapreport.com/ with Safari, although there are other sites which Safari on occaision seems reluctant or too lazy to access!!
In short, I have similar problems as other people. Must be the climate here in London!
good luck

2 days on and my Mac is still fine, my trick with the router seems to have worked. I use a DG834G too.

I think it was a DNS error at the time! Thanks for checking anyway.

I have been having the same problem too with Safari. The first time to a site wont load, so I just hit enter again and the site loads just fine.
But the problem is intermittent! No trouble with it at all this morning except that one page mentioned back here the olapreport.com, made me have to hit enter again and it loaded instantly.

Its the intermittent that makes me not want to do anything yet.
Somewhere else I read that the 10.3.7 when it comes out, will fix this.

Some mornings I have to restart my router to connect with the net, but that is also intermittent. Not this morning,,,,,,You just never know what its going to do to start the day. Interesting,,,,

Try my router trick mentioned above - I've not had a single problem since I did that.

Thank you! I am not too good at this tech stuff, so I am really glad I found your forum.
Is this where I should put the DNS numbers?

I covered up the other numbers in case they shouldnt be viewed by people other than us.

The numbers you covered up didn't really pose any threat, but nothing is harmed by covering them.

In any case, your guess was correct; put the DNS numbers there.

That didn't work for long for me. Instead I put those numbers in on my routers config page, and in the Mac's Network box I put the address of the router. Has worked perfectly ever since.

I would like to try that, perhaps could you give me a bit more detailed instructions, so that I wont mess it up?
First I assume I should call my ISP to get the proper numbers?
Thank you very much for this info!

For some reason, Safari is working fine today, but I should know how to do this when(and if) it starts to have its problems again.

Once you have the DNS numbers from your ISP, you need to enter them into the configuration of your router. This will differ from one router to another, I have a Netgear and can't comment on any others. Once you've put them in on the router, go to the Network pane on OS X and where you can enter the DNS numbers, instead enter the number of your router, i.e. 192.168.0.1.

Thank you for all this great info.
I will give this a try tomorrow, as I am a bit tired now and sure to mess it up.
I have an Asante router.

I've noticed that if you have a router you do not need to add the DNS servers into the router config. All you really need to do is put your router's DNS server into your Mac's network config. It is the Mac that is the problem - not the router. While putting the DNS servers into your router may not hurt right now, later when/if the servers change you're going to run into some problems with your connection.

I think I will not do anything! With my level of technology understanding, I dont want to mess this up. I can really be creative in screwups, so I will wait,,,,,,,

Today I have not had to reboot the router, nor have I had a single Safari "cant see the page" thing, so I better leave well enuf alone.

This is a really interesting topic, as nobody knows how to fix it permanently nor figure out what is actually happining.
This troubleshooting stuff is fun, as long as I am watching and not doing it on my Mac.
Grandmothers know a lot of stuff, but I will back off on this one.

It's actually getting a little silly now. Apple should have fixed this long ago. this is the first time in a long while I've been upset to this extent with Apple. added to the not finding of the page i'm also annoyed at the slowness of Safari.

I just installed it a few minutes ago, too early to tell, but I sure hope it fixes it.
It was intermittent, so I will have to see what happens over the next few days.
Thank you! for bringing this update to my attention.
