I just got this phone, and of course there are several mac issues. So I hope that some people may have answers, and that others considering purchasing this phone will be able to find out more info about it before laying down several bucks.
THE COMPLAINTS:
1) When you setup/pair the device in 10.3.7 System Preferences, it is only recognized as compatible with Address book. But I cannot get it to pair with Address Book. And the infamous on-card-at-a-time is the only way I can sync contacts (old story, I know).
1b) The a780 does not seem to be recognized as a Dial-up Gateway, so it cannot be used to share the internet with OSX via bluetooth. But this worked with my v600--so sad. Probably the #1 feature I wanted in the phone. PLEASE: is there any way to get it to share internet? I've tried to put the phone in USB Modem mode. System Preferences sees it as a modem, but it will not dial out any numbers. Perhaps a linux-based PPP solution could be installed on the phone and connected via bluetooth or usb from OSX.
2) no way to sync calendars.
3) Few, if any, internet sites or forums in english regarding the a780. Motorola has a HK site with an "English" button, but it goes back to chinese (
http://www.motorola.com.hk/chi/motom...80/default.ASP).
4) I can't get onsync to do ANYTHING with it.
5) I can't find any Linux software for it (or even development kit) other than Java. Where's the cross compiler?
6) I can't see how to get secure imap/secure smtp to work in email client
THE GOOD:
1) perhaps the best screen I've ever seen on a phone.
2) can copy photos/movies/text/mp3s/etc very easily across the USB connection
3) transFlash is probably the coolest memory technology today
4) great sound on the stereo headset/handsfree
OVERALL:
I give it about 5-out-of-10. I feel confident that software vendors (onSync/etc) will come out with solutions that help. Also, the rumored Motorola/Apple partnership could result in updated phone ROMs or Apple software (bluetooth & isync).
Please post info here.
