How to make a copy of my MacOS DVD?

My macbook came with a copy of 10.4.6 if I'm not mistaken, it's 2 DVDs.
I tried to make a copy of DVD 1 using toast but it says the media (the DVDR) doesn't have enought space to make the copy.
I don't want my original DVD to get messed up, what should I do?

You need a dual layer disc drive if you want to make a copy of each disc, which the MacBook does not have.

I recently backed up my retail copy of tiger to a dvd using toast and don't remember it saying anything about not enough space. I hope my backup works.

That's because the retail version is one DVD, base system install. The restore discs have additional software specific to the computer.

The MacBook's drive supports DVD+R Double Layer, according to http://www.apple.com/macbook/specs.html

Bah, you're right!
They mislead me because reading dual-layer discs is a part of the core DVD specification, and is required of ALL DVD drives, without exception. Because of that, it's not customary to list it being able to read dual- or double-layer DVD±R.
