Bush Admin. Urged To Help Condemned Bangladeshi Editor
October 29, 2006 1:30 p.m. EST
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent
Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner (N.Y.) has written to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urging her to intervene on behalf of a Bangladeshi newspaper editor expected to be sentenced to death for his criticism of Muslim extremists and advocacy of diplomatic relations with Israel.
Weiner took up the cause of Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury, editor of Dhaka's The Weekly Blitz English-language newspaper, after reading about his plight in The Jerusalem Post.
The prominent representative wrote to Rice, "You should convey to the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry that continued prosecution of these outrageous charges indicates intolerance and extremism not in keeping with American interests in the region."
Choudhury was first arrested in 2003 while preparing to board a flight to Israel, where he had been invited to address a gathering about advancing mutual understanding between Jews and Muslims.
He was reportedly tortured repeatedly during his 17-month internment.
Refusing to back down, Choudhury continued writing against the dangers of extremist Islam, and for normalizing relations between Bangladesh and Israel.
That led to Choudhury's near lynching earlier this month when a mob of 40 Muslims, including senior members of Bangladesh's ruling party, broke into his office and mercilessly beat the journalist. Police refused to allow Choudhury to file charges against his assailants.
At the same time, the regime in Dhaka decided to pursue charges of sedition, treason and blasphemy against the Choudhury. His trial is scheduled to begin on October 12. He is expected to receive the death penalty.

THIS IS A SIGN OF THE GLOBAL CANCER.
Free speech and dissent that we hold dear is not tolerated in many Islamic countries. There are people who want to create the same conditions and environment here.
President Bush will probably not get involved in this and it would be wise for him to avoid alienating the Muslim governments who are cooperating with us on the War on Terror.

Don't know, but I always try to not let today be yesterday's tomorrow.
