"unmounted" HD

A friend is having some problems with his MAc. WE have tried many, many ways to get the Mac to boot up so we can at least recover all his data. The only way we can "see" the HD is via Disk First Aid which tells us it it is unmounted.
His description of the problem is as follows. I am helping him from a distance rather than physically.
My computer froze when shutting down and now when I start up I get the flashing ?. I restarted with the operating system CD and get the
message that my HD is not recognizable do I want to initialize. I choose no.
When I try to run the utilities on the CD I get the message that my HD is
unmounted. (Note: I recently ugraded from OS 9.0 to 9.1)
Do you know how I can remount my HD, and what would cause this to
happen?
I am using a G4/450 mac, 25 gig HD and 128 meg of ram, it has an
internal 100 meg zip drive, cd/dvd and I have a scanner, printer and stylus
attached using usb cables.

Minor HD damage. Data should be fine.
Run a copy of Disk Warrior, from Alsoft, over it.
It will fix any problems you have.
Norton may also work, but I don't like it, and I recommend Disk Warrior...

Yes, indeed, Disk warrior tops just about anything out there for your type of problem. My copy just paid for itself as I just recovered my Ti's hard drive after installing some outdated camera software that caused my 9.1 hard drive to just disappear. OSX partition was still there. Booted up from my disk warrior CD by holding down the "C" key and than clicked on the Disk Warrior icon to open and run the program. Repaired a ton of corruptions including problems with my boot sector. Took all of 2 to 3 minutes to rebuild and correct all my issues.
