HEy Guys

Buddy just bougth a new Macbook Pro to replace his iBook.
His iBook was connected to an external HD that had all his music on it. Its easy enough to just plug it in to the new machine and have iTunes pull the library....but how can we keep and move all the playlists from the old machine and put on the new?

Thanks for any help.

Do you want to keep the stuff on the external and load it in iTunes, or copy the stuff to the new macbook pro?

Nope....Want to keep it on the drive.
Just want to bring in all the playlists from the old machine into the new one so he does not have to sit there and recreate each one, he has his playlists organized as each album so there is a lot of them there.

Thanks for the reply!

He may have an iTunes folder on the external drive. In that folder may be a file called iTunes Library.

Does he have those on the external drive? If so, then do this: connect the drive to his new laptop. Make sure the iTunes application is not active (quit). Now start up iTunes and hold down the shift and option keys as it starts up. This should give you a window where you can choose the iTunes library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive to select this library.

Hopefully he's still got the iBook, because that's where the playlists reside. Here's how Apple says to do it:

How to re-create your iTunes Library

Problem with having all your tunes on an external library is what you're gonna do when you're on the road?

In the fantasy world of unlimited funds, you could put an MCE hard drive in the MBP optical bay! Thereby giving yourself all sorts of storage space on the MBP--but no longer being able to watch a DVD on the road, unless you brought an external optical player along.
