I just got a used Playstation and I'd like to do a couple of good RPG during the holidays.
I heard SquareSoft made a few goods FF for the PSX, which one do you recommend?
Anything else you'd recommend?

Final Fantasy 7 was the most popular ever. Definitely worth a look.

Suikoden and Star Ocean had their fair share of fans.

FF7, like there was any question.
Contact me when you defeat all Weapons. Until then, you are nothing.

FF7 still goes for around 50$on Ebay, pretty expensive.
Can't wait to try it, a few days and I'm done with school!
I've beaten all FFs for NES and SNES, that was the good time ...

Vagrant Story is quite possibly the best game that no one has ever heard of. It's hard to find, but pick it up if you can. It's well worth it. This game has what FFXII's battle system was supposed to be (unsurprising, since it was developed by the same team and takes place in the same world). This is what happens when it's done right.
There are three FF games "native" to the PSX: 7, 8, and 9. Of these, 7 and 9 are great, though 8 is much more iffy (the gameplay is not well-liked among the fanbase, and not without reason). Most of the older FF games (all except FF3) were also ported in various collections.
Star Ocean: the Second Story is quite good. The first game was never released in the US, but it's easy enough to pick up on the story of the second. I should warn you, however: the voice acting is pretty awful (though I'll always be a fan of Decus' "DON'T YOU THINK I'M VERY STRONG?!")
I've never followed the Dragon Quest series or the Tales series, but both have very good reputations.
I really liked Xenogears, but I've never seen a game that so desperately needed cutscene-skip. Valkyrie Profile is another good but unusual choice. I lump them together because they are both extremely difficult to find, though VP may be easier now with the PSP port.

I've heard mixed reviews of Chrono Cross. Fans of the original Chrono Trigger don't seem to like it nearly as much. Then again, Chrono Trigger was one of the best games ever, so I guess that's to be expected.

Great game, IMO. Not as good as FF7 or Xenogears, but I was late to the party.

Final Fantasy VII.
Best
Game
Ever
(well, next to OoT)
Parasite Eve isn't bad either. It has a nice style to it. I gave it to my nephew recently and he liked it.
One thing about FF VII: don't expect to finish it in a week. You're going to EAT, SLEEP, and LIVE this game.

That's what I'm looking for! Can't wait to start!
Do you recommend using using a guide or a walkthrough to make sure I get the most powerful items/spells?

You don't need one to finish the game, but if you're a completist, get one.

I still haven't beaten FFIX. Or the first disk. Yeah... I'm kinda terrible at RPGs. But what I have played has been a lot of fun, so I'll toss in my hat for that one.

FFVII and FFIX are the two best PS FFs, but neither of them come close to being as good as the SNES ones. I would recommend Chrono Trigger if it weren't for the horrendous load times on the PS. As was already mentioned, Lunar is excellent. That being said, the best RPG for PS—come to think of it, the best PS game bar none—despite being a strategy game, is easily Final Fantasy Tactics. Get it, live it, love it.

Tactics is very good, but it has a couple of impressive flaws, including the fact that none of the probabilities they let you see (attack hit percentage, in particular) reflect your actual in-game odds (which are usually much lower). For once, this isn't just complaining about lousy luck, either; this may be one of the most studied and hacked video games ever, and the algorithms have all been cracked, and the odds are definitely different from what they show you.

I played FF9 in 4 days last semester. Though I confess I didn't get Ark.
Anyway FF9 is great, Xenogears if you can find it is great, I enjoyed the little I played of Chrono Cross.

Good choice starting with FF7. Although there are varying opinions on how good the game is, it was certainly one of the most important video games of its time. It cemented Sony's dominance over Nintendo, pushed true 3-D graphics into the limelight, and really started the trend of filling up multiple discs with FMVs when the game could otherwise fit onto only one.
Hey; I didn't say that it only had good influence on the industry, did I?

Oh, that's not a real flaw. I mean, it is, but it doesn't make the game any less enjoyable. I thought you were going to mention the game's biggest flaw, which is the fact that it becomes ridiculously easy once you add the almighty Thundergod Cid.

I don't know about that. It gets awfully frustrating when the game says you have a 100% chance to hit yet you miss four times in a row. If an attack has a low actual chance of hitting, then I want to know about it so that I might be able to select a better attack. As it stands, the numbers in FFT are outright misleading, making your attack choice a gamble that is stacked against you. That's not enjoyable.

Yeah, there's the Orlandu problem. Beowulf is pretty cheap too. But you can simply avoid using these characters, whereas there's no way to get accurate numbers out of the game.

I suggest you get a FF7 guide so you dont miss some of the hidden weapons. I remember Cloud had a sword that could get 3x Meteria bonus (materia?)... and in order to get Barret's best weapon he had to actually be in your party at the time you opened the chest...
Enjoy the game though. I'm not a huge RPG person, but man that game was fun.

If you want some old hack n slash, get Diablo.
However, last time I checked it was going for about $50 on eBay.

You are almost certain to enjoy the following:
- Final Fantasy VII
- Lunar
- Lunar 2
The following games I'd look into a little more closely to see if they're right for you:
- Parasite Eve (interesting and unique approach to an RPG)
- Grandia (an underrated classic. One of the finest RPGs for the original PS)
- Suikoden I & II (expensive as ****, but worth every penny)
- Breath of Fire 3 (Best BOF for PS...? In my oppinion, yes!)
