How to convert .avi files to an iPod compatible format?

The title pretty much says it all. What program(s) could I use to convert .avi or .mpeg files to a format that would work on the latest video iPods?

Videora can do this on Windows PC.
If you are running a Mac, choose iSquint or Handbrake (FREE).
