Anybody happen to know of a good tool that captures the screen on an iPad? Would like to find something that saves the screen to a jpg. Would be really cool if we could record activity to a utube flick too.
Interesting how the ipad automatically capitalizes the P in iPad.
Thanks, danbrew

Press the power button and the home button at the same time. Puts the jpg into the Saved Photos folder in Photo Albums.

Actually, it wasn't implemented until iPhone OS 2.0, but close enough.

The only way I could figure out how to get them out of the iPad was to go into the photo app and copy the picture and then go into the mail app and paste the picture. Is there a better/easier way?
thanks,
danbrew
Would be very cool if I could capture "video" - online cbts, etc. Got an app that I'm working with where it would be very helpful if I could say to somebody "watch this tutorial" and then it's a movie of my touch, typing, etc.
bonus if you can tell me what that thing in the picture is.
extra huge bonus if you can tell me exactly where that one is located.

It's a gun.
I'm gonna say Truk Island or Palau.
No screen capture apps available for iPad at this time.

I don't think I've ever seen a video of the iPhone/iPad UI captured directly on the device. Most tutorials I've seen have used the hardware emulator that comes with the developer tools and recorded that for the tutorial. Like below:
Videos - OmniGraffle for iPad - Products - The Omni Group

Ummm, the question has already been answered. Screen captures are provided by the system itself. No app required.

Ummm, the OP asked a follow-up question about recording video on the phone/pad. "Screen capture" doesn't just include single image acquisition.

Well, that would result in an analog recording.
Bottom line: right now, there is no iPad screen capture app that would let you record a digital stream of your screen.

With your iPad connected to your Mac, open Image Capture-the iPad will be mounted as a source device. Click on the entry for the iPad and Image Capture will list all the photo and video contents. This is WAY under documented-you'd think Apple would at least hint that it works this way.

Doesn't surprise me at all. There is tonnes of undocumented and extremely useful functionality in Apple software.

Doesn't it automatically open iPhoto? The iPhone does.
No need for documentation - it just happens.

My iPhone just makes iTunes open when I connect it, so it never has "just happened" for me. You can control what automatically opens when you connect the phone or iPad though. Not sure why my setup didn't open iPhoto too...

Isn't the default behavior when connecting any iDevice to open iTunes? My iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad have never opened iPhoto.

It's been so long I may be remembering incorrectly, but I think the option to open iPhoto when any sort of camera device is connected is stored within iPhoto itself and pops up when you launch iPhoto for the first time. If you don't set it to open every time a camera is connected when that dialogue first appears, you have to set it in iPhoto prefs.

Ok admit I am an idiot - but does anyone know if on an iPad 2 if you accidentally take a video instead of a picture - can you ever capture a fram from the video and save as a picture? Thanks!

At the top of the device, upper right-hand corner.
Screen shots are not saved as PDF; they're saved as PNG files.
