I'm now posting this from my new ibook. I canceled all my online ordres and just went to my local retailer store and what do you know they had them in stock he got 8 yesterday. Although they had the dvd model which is what I wanted I just went ahead and got the cd version and added a 256MB of RAM and life is good. Please be warned the keyboard on this new ibook is pretty crappy as far as taking it off and putting more ram in. Make sure you have a extra extra small screwdriver to get the screws out its not fun trust me. Well best of luck to everybody. Its nice but its not worth all the hype I have to admit. Luck!

After the announcement of OS X shipping on everything, I couldn't wait too long. Today, I ordered a CD-RW stock iBook from the Apple Education Store (stupid no more retail with that version). The confirmation email said 3-4 weeks. Crossing my fingers that it will be sooner (keep on canceling your oders people, to bring me higher up on the list ).

BTW, I don't want any other version of the iBook, as I have no use for DVDs, and the 64 MB of RAM in the CD model is pathetic, so CD-RW was my only real choice.

A little word of caution: To all the people who are shopping for new iBooks, be aware that the non-bundled free OS X upgrade oficially only applies to authorized Apple resellers. If you want to take advantage of the free offer, you may want to verify that your dealer is an authorized reseller--at least until Apple starts preloading OS X.

I canceled my order at Outpost.com and called J&R - the guy I talked to said that there were three 500/DVD models in stock, but that 4 were spoken for - strange. Anyway, he sold me one, which he said I would get next week, for $1433 including shipping. I figure the $67 is worth sticking it out a bit longer, and I got some RAM cheap too, so I'll end up with 384 MB instead of the 128 I would have gotten with Outpost for about the same price. If speed of delivery is not a huge issue, J&R could save you some money.

Evan.

Here's a list of authorized online retailers from apple's site.

If that Alpha Top quote is true, count on Alpha Top to lose all their Apple business. At least that's what I'd do if somebody on my vendor list yacked about my unannounced products, especially if I'd just introduced a model and wanted to keep sales high.

I wouldn't believe the mombo jumbo about the 14.1 display on the ibook models. First off the ibook is for the consumer on the go. And with its 12.1 display and sleek design its definatly that. I'm loving this ibook size and all great latop and speedy at that. Rumors make the world go around.

Woohoo!!! Just got a confirmation email from Apple saying my iBook has shipped! Went to FEDEX for shipping info, says it shipped out of the Sacramento, CA area - only two hours away. Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow?

I just got my new iBook today (DVD/384MB). Actually, I'm typing this message on it right now. It's really great, not much more to say. I tried everything that I could think of to override the resolution limit of 1024x768 on an external monitor, but Apple has done a pretty good job of locking everything down. The LCD is awesome, though.

Good news for people in the UK waiting on CTO models... Apple Store UK tell me that I was first on the list, so if mine's shipped, others shouldn't be too far behind. Hopefully.

I just got a call from Tom at Power Mac Pac in Portland, OR. My ibook is waiting They even matched the Apple price on the extra battery! Excellent service.

I think they said they were suppose to get 5 dvd books in yesterday, so if anyone is looking you might want to give them a call. I'm pretty sure they ship ... and Oregon has no sales tax

I keep reading about people having their iBooks waiting on their front porches or doorsteps for them, I assumed left there at their request by the delivery service. I don't know where you folks live, but I'd like to live in that same town. If I had them leave my new iBook at my doorstep until I returned home, my iBook would be someone else's new iBook in about 10 minutes!

No kidding, Sanford! I live downtown.

One would need a combination of three codes, keys, or remote controls to get anywhere near my front porch. I have to stay home when I'm expecting a delivery.

It's a shame us Texans feel that way. Texas is worse than when I grew up in San Angelo ... we kept our doors open at night, literally, to help keep cool. Since then I've lived in Del Rio, Abilene, Arlington, Duncanville, and now Round Rock. It definitely has changed for the much worse; it is NOT as bad as other places I've been. St. Louis has more murders in three weeks or so than Austin does in a "bad" year.

That is sad to hear. I live in Naples, FL and its very safe around here. No one steals anything from your doorstep. Most residential areas are "gated communities" anyway. That means only other neighbors and houses are around and all outsiders have to pass through a gate with a guard. That prevents any criminals from entering my community. And those living in my community are trustworthy. Either way, hope Texas shapes up a bit and becomes more safe...I have to visit Texas sometime, interesting state.

Got shipping notice for my ibook 128/10G/DVD today. I ordered on the 16th May but as I payed by bank transfer they didn't officially class it as an order until they received money on May 23rd. So three days in all between them getting the order and shipping it, plus I live in the UK!!

I ordered my iBook 500 DVD the morning of 5/25. That evening I got confirmation that the order was being processed. I was hoping that by some grace of God or something it would be prepped for shipping today. However, now the status is back to being processed. Can anyone explain this? The Apple site says that shipping will be 2 to 3 weeks. I paid the extra $15 for FedEx shipping. Does anyone know if this really makes a difference?

I took a chance and ordered from MacMall yesterday. The rep told me that the DVD models were sold out but that they planned to have some in early June. To my surprise, this morning they were in stock. Mine was shipped and delivered today....it is at my house right now waiting for me. I cancelled my order with Apple. They didn't even ask why. Gotta love those Apple reps.

Slight off topic here, but with all these threads of people waiting for their chicklets (me being one), and retailers running out of them quickly, is this normal activity for a new hardware product from Apple, or is it a good sign of strong sales? I thinking from an investment point of view, since the PowerBook propelled Apple way over wall street estimates. I'm wondering if the same will happen next quarter...

It is pretty normal for new hardware products. Supply will eventually catch up with the demand. It is important that Apple gauge demand and then produce the units, this way the amount of hardware in the retail channel is kept low (and thus keeping costs down). You've got to love economics.

Yes, and just imagine how amazing it will be once a company like Apple can reach total zero inventory levels, in that hardware is manufactured on demand within minutes and shipped.

Well, I'm happy to report that I finally got mine (iBook DVD/128/20GB) on Thurs., May 31 after ordering May 1. It's sweet. It came with OS 9.1 and OS X preinstalled. Although it didn't come with the OS X Developer Tools CD. Oh well, small price to pay for a free copy of OS X. I have one stuck pixel near the center of the screen. The only time you even notice it is during DVD playback (where it's bright blue). Anyway, I'm still working on massaging it out. With some luck, it will hopefully come out. Good luck to the rest of you. You will totally love your 'Book when it comes.

I'm not familiar with "stuck pixels" and certainly not "massaging them out." This sounds very interesting. Could you explain all that to us? Thanks.
