What doesn't jive? With Cubeoid, we weren't sure at first if it was the same person. Between investigating that and banning his new handle, there were a couple of days of discussion behind the scenes.

And in one instance where we used a "wait and see" attitude, the person had been banned for just being obnoxious. He came back with a different handle and the obnoxious stuff stopped. We communicated (off line, of course) with him that this sort of new behavior was required for his continued participation. With Cubeoid, who was banned for a pattern of bad behavior topped off by posting porn links, we haven't seen a potential for rehabilitation.

@Laminar
I don't get the inconsistency you're alluding to: whether former users contact us first or just start posting is up to them, not up to us. Depending on what they do, we react.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Without even having read this thread beyond a skim, I'll say that I think it's funny this has become a discussion.

New member profile is created >> Said profile is named in a way so as to pay homage to an older, permanently banned profile >> Staff investigation is made into circumstances surrounding creation of said profile and determination of identity behind it >> Investigation yields results such that the decision to ban said profile is agreed upon after deliberation.

The End.

If that isn't enough for you, then you may way to submit your name in the next Moderator recruitment round so you can come behind the scenes to find out all of our dirty, sneaky, scheming little secrets. But if you seriously intend on coming aboard, might wanna keep the second-guessing, bitching, winging and complaining in check.

And in the future; How about we not turn threads Rob-centric when even he himself has neglected to make an attempt at it? Yeah?

Bans are ****ing stupid to begin with. There are always ways around it, I have proof. If you want to punish someone, do what Misha did. Change all my posts to somethign regarding ponies for a few days. That is infuriating. Much more so that making a yahoo account and creating a username.

Besides, banning people is really gay to begin with. You might not like what they ahve to say, but I think we're all open enough here that we aren't going to actually get offended when conversing. It'd be better to just limit people a bit, instead of saying NO FOR EVER AND EVER UNTIL ETERNITY!!!!!!!1!!!1!!

I never thought of that, might be useful. Ponies and rainbows. Though I'm partial to more subtle responses too.

Really? You reread your own posts to check for stuff like that?

First of all, the posts of mine you have quoted are not `rules' that the staff has set in stone for such rare events, but statements of facts. You're right that my first post is inaccurate and we did let permabanned members back in after watching them for a certain amount of time.

I can't believe you're using yourself as an example. Most people have enough dignity to walk away from something when they realize they're not welcome. Yeah, some people will be immature and fight it for a bit, but making dozens or hundreds of accounts to come back to a place where you're not wanted is not how 99.999% of the population would react to a ban, especially after being warned. I'm still wondering if you're an epic troll or if you're really that egocentric that you still don't get it. In the end, it comes down to the forums being controlled by a private entity. If they don't want you there for whatever reason, that's their right.

iLikebeer, this thread is about Cubeoid. You're getting personal there, and those things have a tendency to escalate. Keep the discussion on topic.

Almost any block, be it a physical lock or a computer based one, can be avoided with enough time. In many cases, that time is 5-10 minutes (yes, really. Watch a locksmith open an apartment door some time). That's enough for a reasonable security, and it is enough online in all but a very small minority of cases. This is one of the reasons we have bans (the other is that it sends a very strong statement that certain behaviour is not acceptable). That last minority is handled through careful considerations by those tasked to do so - ie, admins and mods. Black & white rules are nice, but black & white rules for every situation pretty soon becomes the legislation for a good-sized country. We're not a country, and the consequences of a ban are somewhat less severe than those of being thrown in jail. This was a special case, and we chose not to make exception. If you'd like an exception, please explain why.

You were not alone in this concern, but we have investigated thoroughly, and it was definitely a different person-and definitely the same person who used the original handle back in 2006.

If it really was him, you might consider locking the WDLove tribute thread, too. It was several years ago, but if I'm not mistaken, WDlove left because cubeoid totally screwed him over and embarrassed him. That thread is pretty classy in that context. No need to go down that road.

Huh ?

I must be completely dense today, since I don't get at all what you're saying.

Was cuboid a sock-puppet all along ?
How come the suck-puppeteer is not banned ?

Railroader implied that another member was the one using the new Cubeoid handle. (To be honest, I assumed it was our favorite tuba player).
Glenn replied that the new Cubeoid was different from that person, and definitely the same person as the Old Cubeoid.

A pity he hasn't learned a thing in the last four years.

Ah, duh, now I get it. "Definitely a different person" than the person Railroader suspected to have raised this new persona.

Correct. I don't want to point fingers at who was suspected of being the "puppet master," so I'm not going to. But there were concerns and a lot of research was done to figure out what exactly was actually happening. "Oh Cubeoid" was without a doubt "Cubeoid."

But was '06 Cubeoid the same person as '10 Cubeoid? Or was sockpuppetry involved?

I guarantee you that they are the same person, I've been in contact with the real Cubeoid. The only nicknames I've ever been are this one and Butthawk, and I think Buttsauce during a relatively short lived phase of mine, and John McCandyCain or something like that ages ago...

My disguises generally suck, I'm definitely no Abe...

1. Thank you for the awesomeness

2. I only did it that one time, for that one thread. This has been my handle (except once a while back when I forgot my PW after being off the boards for a long time BPR2 was the nick)

So I’m in the clear here.
