I just sent this out to the Darwin Development list, I figured I should post it here as well:

Some of you already know this. For most of you it is the first you
have heard of it. Starting in July I will be working for Apple.

I suppose the most important element of this is how alters my
relationship with Darwin. While I have been hired to work on OS X, I have
not been hired to continue any of my Darwin work specifically. I will
continue to work on the projects I have been involved with in my free
time. I expect that the reduction in the amount of time I have available
will be more than offset by the new resources at my disposal, both in
terms of easy access to development hardware and software, and the fact
that I will actually ne able go and pester various people in person ;-) In
short I do not see it significantly altering things, and expect to
maintain a similiar presence on the lists, and in the community.

Now I need to get back to coding...

I am touched and overwhekmed that you have been hired by Apple and that you have chosen to share this knowledge with us... but, for me, a naive, still maturing user of these forums, would you please explain to me the significance of this in relationship to Darwin (which I admittedly know very little about, except for it's position in the development of OS X and the fact that it is opensource.

Who says Apple isn't paying attention?!

The way Louis dealt with that DP/PPP kernel panic issue was incredibly impressive, I thought.

I'm going to sleep better at night knowing Louis is working on OSX.

Congratulations, Louis.

Congratulations Louis! I hope we will continue to see you on the boards now and then.

Are you able to give us any details on the sorts of things you will be doing at Apple?

Good luck.

My wholehearted congratulations to you, Louis!

You certainly deserve your position at Apple, judging from the seemingly fantastic and selfless work you have done on the PowerMac G4/PPP problem.

And to think you posted this in the PowerMac G4/PPP thread:
I will be starting a job with a large company that makes a number of Macintosh products in July. Once the details are finalized I'll let you guys know who it is.

Louis
Very true, Apple is indeed a large company making a number of Macintosh products!!! I just didn't think you meant a company making the Macs as well!

Again, my congratulations to you!

I bid you will at your new post. Your posts and knowledge (and especially your handling of the DP/PPP issue) were much welcomed, and as someone said previously, I think all of us will feel better knowing that people of your caliber are working at Apple on the OS X project.

Good luck. I certainly hope you find the time to drop by the forum from time to time; maybe you can finally solve that mystery of the Jaguar build for me now that you're part of Steve's Sacred Cadre.

Louis,
I've written about Apple in over a dozen different magazines and have earned a living at consulting for Mac sites and repairing and upgrading Macs.... I've wanted to work for Apple for a very long time but never got the chance... I'm jealous and extremely happy for you. A good friend of mine is an Apple Executive and he has never been more happy. I know you'll love it there!

Make OS X greater than ever!

Louis,

A big Congrats and Atta-Boy!

While I'd love to fill this message with a mile long 'things to do' list I'll put just two of the most important.

1] Remember to kick back and enjoy yourself from time to time
2] When stressed see item #1 (repeat as needed)

All work and no play will make.... Well, you know the rest!

Cheers!

Dave

P.S. Oh yea and get that dern DVD Player App working (sorry I couldn't resist)

Unfortunately the reality is once you become an employee of almost any company, you sign legal agreements that basically tell you (direct or implied) to keep your mouth shut. Any talking you do in a public forum should generally be approved by your management (who will say no guaranteed), and you risk being terminated by even trivial, off-the-cuff, remarks. Apple is no different, especially given that Steve Jobs' monstrous ego demands that he or his big-shot execs do all the talking and get all the credit. Unfortunately, its these folks who not only don't care but also don't have a clue regarding the issues important to you and me.

Apple employees likely don't normally participate in forums for this reason, out of fear. CYA is the term. Remember worker_bee? Ever wonder why Apple engineers never ever chime in to any forums anywhere? And its not because they're busy, which they indeed are.

When Louis starts in July, I wouldn't expect to hear from him again due to employer confidentiality agreements. It won't be because he no longer cares.

Sorry to sound cynical, but I've been working for high-tech for 15 years, and this is the reality...

Not true. There are Apple regulars on omnigroup talk and darwin lists. Worker_bee violated NDA. Posting in a thread and answering questions about general inquiries, solving problems and respondin to bug reports [as Louis has done] is not in violation of NDA.

Good to know that someone we've had interaction with and that has shown care in trying to fix some of our issues is going to be working for Apple.

Congratulations Louis,
It is great that you have been hired by Apple! All my best to you for a successful and long lasting career with them. I am looking to a bright future with OS "X". I know nothing about Darwin, nothing about UNIX, nothing about how you fixed the problem with kernel panics and PPP issues. I do know that I just enjoy using a Macintosh! Good Luck

I wish I could prepare sushi, I eat enough of it as it is ;-)

I just want to thank all you guys for the response.

Like many of the people at Apple, I am active in their opensource development, and as such I think they *encourage* me to remain publicly vocal in various forums, since that is consistent with their opensource commitment. I'm already under various NDA's (Apple, TiVo, a startup or two), this is no different, I need to watch what I say.

I will continue to post here, though I will probably stop posting about speculations on future software/hardware, for obvious reasons ;-) Not that I did anything but speculate like the rest of you anyway...

For any of you emailed me personally in the last day or two, I apologize if I have not responded, I have gotten a lot of personal responses from what I posted on the list, and I am little bogged down.

sderaj: Definately ;-) If you want to give me your contact info drop me an email ([email protected]), and I will contact you once I get to Apple ;-)
