I went to the Sneak Preview of Miami Vice tonight in Miami. I effin' loved it, Michael Mann did a great job with it, and it was quite an intense flick. Fast cars, Big guns, and hot chicks!!! Right up my alley! Cinematography was freakin' rad.

Go see it when it comes out, Awesome awesome!

One of my teachers that Im friends with runs a recording studio, and he's a DJ as well. He got to do at least one of the tracks for the film. Look for Justin Paul in the credits.

But Mann is by far one of the best directors. I cant wait to this.

I was hoping this would be a period piece but I dont think Mann like to do those types of movies, though this would of been great if it were set in the 80's

I'm quite surprised at how many people are looking forward to this movie - it looks like yet another summer blockbuster buddy-cop movie, which I've seen way too many of to begin with...

I'd just rather see a movie that looks mildly original, like Little Miss Sunshine.

Only 8 reviews so far, but they're mostly favourable.

I must say I'm a little (pleasantly) surprised. I wasn't expecting much.

P.S. The last three movies I saw: Superman Returns, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The Devil Wears Prada. Out of the three of them, by far the best movie was the The Devil Wears Prada, and while pretty good, it was not an outstanding movie either. Here's hoping Miami Vice doesn't suck.

I completely agree. Just have an open mind when watching the movie, 'cause besides all the characters having the same names and being cops, there's no similarities. oh, except the awesomeness!

Jamie Foxx's love interest in the movie had a body double for the sex scenes. She said that was not her J-O-B!

Did no one else catch the Miami Vice NBC evening Friday or Saturday night?

They showed the very first episode and it was still a bit raw but mainly everything we knew and loved about it was all there. It was a GREAT stroll down memory lane.

And an EXTRA SPECIAL little tidbit is the now well known actor who was just a promising newcomer who played Don Johnson's first partner. I'll leave it up to you to find out his identity for yourself.

(At the end of the show they previewed a scene from the new film. FWIW I didn't sense much chemistry between the two actors as they did the obligatory hamming for the TV cameras while talking about the film.) I think the Miami Vice series is available on DVD now.

BTW, Does anyone find it fun/funny that Matt Santos has a Wikipedia entry as POTUS?

No way I'm seeing "Miami Vice". Other than the name, it has nothing to do with the TV show of the 80s - which it is trying to sell itself with.

Sad rap crap and the two most overrated POS actors available for money.

I'm sorry, but the REAL Miami Vice happened in the 80s, with the appropriate music, clothes and environment. That was its charm. This crap is like Bad Boys 2

*this is just my POV, I'm really happy for you if you get some enjoyment out of this movie - I for one am waiting for the second Miami Vice season on DVD*

I haven't seen this movie yet, but I hold out some hope. I grew up with the series, so I have a little sentimentality towards it.

But I don't think that you can put Jamie Foxx in the category of "most overrated POS actors available for money". He's quite an actor. If you haven't seen "Ray" and/or "Collateral" you should check em out. His work in those 2 films really sets him well above "most overrated POS actors available for money".

Collin Ferral on the other hand.....

This place never ceases to amaze me. The occasional severe lack of open-mindedness is wacky.

Lando's Stache, yes. Colin and Jaime both get kinda nekkid in the film. I didn't care for it, but each were short scenes.

OK, I'll take you're word about the non-existent rap in the movie, but damn it sure was all over the movie trailer. Me not like rap + Miami vice.

Last 3 movies I saw was: Cars, History of Violence and Sideways. All very good.

Jamie Foxx is mediocre, always plays the same character. Like so many other Hollywood actors. Colin Farrell is a member of the Gyllenhaal club. Eww.

They're supposed to be Crockett and Tubbs, for crying out loud.

Oh well. To each his own.

I love it when people claim my opinion is wrong.

Nice. I'm was a big Michael Mann fan, before he started with the awful digital recordings and the Jamie Foxx thing he seems to have. He made some of the best action films I've seen.

Unfortunately, Miami Vice is a concept larger than the name. It is very interesting to watch the documentaries on the TV show where they talk about how Miami Vice was made to be the MTV of cop shows. A million dollars an episode (in 1984), it was supposed to be a high-budget, all-style cop show for the MTV generation.

Needless to say, Miami Vice became way cooler than ever anticipated and made pastel colored suits and sandals a must have item for the American male in his 20s/30s.. That show had color coordination for crying out loud! (only pastels allowed and no red!!) It was all style - although the drama was better than average as well - the show became bigger than itself. It introduced the coolest music of the time it was made. It looked like an hour long movie each week.

That's my opinion, that's why I think Mann jumped the shark with this movie. He thought he was bigger than his TV show and he thought he could remake it into the 21st century without it looking like simply a Michael Mann action film called Miami Vice.

I've wrestled with your original post for a day or so and after letting it simmer on the back burner I still find no way to fairly criticize your point of view.

First of all, as you allude, your POV is YOUR POV! And that can't be denied, not even where we are...collectively, respectively.

And, frankly, I feel the same as you in a way. I loved that period in time and it spoke so much for who we were and where we were THEN that it was immediately embraced...no, absorbed into our personal lives in a way that will probably never be repeated...not with today's 500 channels of distraction. This was when NBC RULED that night and there were few other things to watch or listen to that could dilute the show's societal impact. I still remember talking to my friends about that show in it's first two or three weeks of existence, while we were at a night club in So. Cal.

But the idea of MTV COPS wasn't and isn't only a concept exclusive to the mid-1980's.

Think about it. MTV is still here. Cops are still around. Miami hasn't moved. Drugs and crime remain a problem. Sports and boats and water and planes and fast cars and faster women are a constant. And the scenery, colors and atmosphere of South Florida is still different than anywhere else in the world and still attractive.

And the Mann who brought all of that to the world twenty years ago has revived his original concept and made it relevant to those who today are exactly who we were twenty years ago.

Yet despite the similarities it can't help but be different just as the Francis Ford Coppola Godfather is different from the FFC Godfather II and the FFC Godfather III. Different but similar. The same but different.

In that this latest vision comes out still alive and vibrant from the mind of the original creator I accept this as valid and worthy, not crass or bogus or knocked off or a wannabe commercialized prostitution.

True. It's not the same. Never can be. Never will be.

The vintage has been preserved to sample as much as we'd like on vinyl but it won't ever be as it once was when life itself was an intoxication. And as much as I'd like, that can never be revived, relived in 2-D.

I'll check out the film and want to love it for what it is and hope it delivers a taste of what once was such a heady time.

Stellar post. I have the season 1 dvd, and I even watch the old episodes almost every night on Sleuth channel. The analogy is a good one I think (FFC) and there's thousands that fit the bill as well (old and new car models of the same name come to mind)

No, not really. I didn't have to see Ice Age to know that I hated that movie already. It had Ray Romano's whiny voice in it. I did see it though. I did hate it.

Any Gyllanhaal movie. Same thing. Any member of the Gyllenhaal club in a movie. Same thing. I have way better things to do that watch crap movies starring members of the the Gyllenhaal club of talentless actors that do nothing but piss me off.

That means Miami Vice "the movie" sucks IMO. But not just in my opinion.

Substance places a distant second to style in the big-screen version of "Miami Vice," which sees respected filmmaker Michael Mann returning to the scene of the crime series that so effectively defined a decade.

Gone are the pastel threads and the night-soaked neon that played such a big part in the show that was born of NBC Entertainment chief Brandon Tartikoff's simple yet wildly successful "MTV cops" concept.

In its place is a darker, grittier creature that, while benefiting considerably from Dion Beebe's HD cinematography, is a frustratingly inert affair -- a long and talky excursion that fails to engage the viewer from the outset.

Those in the market for some of that old Crockett-Tubbs camaraderie are bound to be disappointed by the Colin Farrell-Jamie Foxx model, in which the two actors appear to be engaged in a contest to determine who can appear more morose while expending the least amount of energy, especially in terms of their own flat exchanges.

I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

Ok well it isn't the end of the world. Skip the movie and go on with life. But don't hate on us for wanting to see it or liking it.

There are 11 reviews there. That is actually a pretty bad sign, because it means the studio did not have any pre-release screenings for critics. The studios only do that when they fear the critics will pan the crap out of the movie.

All glory to the hypnotoad.
