September 12 is expected to be a big release day for new hardware. Let's talk about it here.

My question, and maybe the keynote will address it since my car comes with a Qi wireless charging dock, could I use that to charge an iPhone 8?

Apple will probably implement their own solution... I wouldn't bet on it.

The event opened with "All You Need is Love"
"The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church" Saint Tertullian, 197 AD

In many ways, this will be a release that is a bit hard to sell. Wireless charging is nice, but a lot of things have it already. Face unlock is great, but it is only on the idiot-expensive model, and others have had it before. If it works better, great, but that is a hard argument to make. Basically the 8 is the quintessential s-model, while the X mostly sells on the design.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Is there a discount for non-idiot faces?

Not quite. I'll bet you an insane amount of money that Apple is working to redesign their magic mouse and trackpad to include wireless charging. Turning their Magic Mouse 2 upside-down to plug it in is a dork move, so imagine having a wireless charging mousepad that would also work for your phone when you don't need a mousepad. You get the idea.

I... I... don't want a wired mousepad.

If my trackpad needs to sit on something with a wire, shouldn't it just have a wire?

You won't have to worry about that. Wireless charging will get faster, and the mouse will still get a few months of battery life. So, imagine a 30-minute wireless charge giving you another few months of use. Meanwhile, your iPhone 8/X can use the pad when your mouse, or trackpad, or keyboard isn't using it. Yes... a wireless charging keyboard.

The other idea that I had this morning is... it's gotta be more than just a wireless charging pad, because that's friggin' easy to make with today's technology. Apple has to do something groundbreaking. Let's call their product WiPad. Imagine being able to charge your Pencil, iPhone, and Mouse, and then still have space leftover to pick up Pencil and use the remaining surface area like a tablet. Then you can use the WiPad as a note taker, or free writing or drawing in a photo app, and when you put Pencil back down, it'll recharge.

I never understood the need for a wireless keyboard in the first place. Wireless mouse OK, but keyboard?

I like the clean look, which is why I don't want a wired charging pad on my desk, but in a general sense I agree.

It's nice for the one on my coffee table paired with my HTPC. Less tripping.

HTPC sure - I used to have an HTPC myself, and used a Logitech wireless desktop thingy for it - but that and for use with iPad are the exceptions.
