...wait, it was ash we owed you, right? You said cash? Oh crap!

Got to say, it's completely awesome not having any noise coming from the planes flying out of Manchester airport. Very peaceful.

You live by the airport?

Any good pix of the ash clouds, as seen by UK city dwellers?

I saw some pictures on Flickr of incredibly beautiful sunsets due to the ash in the Netherlands. A CNN article had a video of the ash cloud, but they changed the videos in the article and it's not there anymore

Yeah, it's just like sandblasting the plane's windows and engine.

according to one of my customers (who works for BA planning flights) the ash is completely invisible even when flying through it. It's slightly stick though, so it coats the engines fan blades and gums everything up until the engine shuts down.

Apparently BA are planning for several more days of no fly and are looking at shipping their entire fleet to southern Europe.

I quite like the sound of a world without jet travel. Last week New York was 6 hours away suddenly it is 3 days away. Obviously this is not tenable economically for an indefinite period though.

Someone on another forum I frequent commented that this joke is by far the worst thing to come out of this whole Eyafjallajökull mess.

I’m not altogether disinclined not to disagree with him.

It's even worse than in German, where "Asche" is at least a colloquial term for "money".

Brother-in-law stuck in Hungary on his way to Poland. Lucky for me that this didn't happen last weekend - I had a mates wedding in Scotland. Real nightmare for Europe - 16,000 flights cancelled. Good news for ferry companies, and bus companies. To cap it all, in France some rail workers are striking.

My brother in law took a taxi from Budapest to Warsaw, cost 1000€ - paid by his company. He said that there are loads of stories about 'taxi drivers' taking people from places like Berlin to Paris. I reckon that the prices are mind-boggling.

Sure. If you stop the earth's rotation, gravity should cease, and all magma just beneath the crust will stay down there due to the lack of pressure forcing it up through volcanoes.

Speaking of which, do you think it's a bit of a mistake to recommend to the local council that we send a scale model of a Spitfire as this year's gift to our twin town of Mitterteich? We've ran out of ideas, and they keep sending us fibreglass models of fish for some reason.

And speaking of Spitfires, why are prop planes grounded? I wouldn't have thought the ash would bother them over much?

Because it effectively sandblasts them. It can also cause instrumentation issues.

I guess it can still sandblast out the windscreens. Propellor or not, being able to actually see through the windows is generally desirable when flying a plane.

Edit: Damn, too slow.

I'm sure they'll appreciate the sentiment.

Depending on their sense of humour (you never can tell with Bavarians), they might send you one of these in return.

But prop planes generally fly under the cloud?

No, now the ash is down to ground level. It should be noted that for the first two days, VFR flying (small planes) were allowed. Now no VFR or IFR flying is allowed, at least in the UK.

Depends where you are. Some measurements in the west of Jutland have found ash as far down as 200–300 metres, while measurements in the south of Sweden have found no ash below around 1.5 km. Sweden, Poland, and Germany (I believe) are allowing prop planes and gliders, though if you do fly in one, it’s completely at your own risk and very much not recommended.

The only flying that’s currently allowed here (and even that is highly limited) is vital rescue-mission military helicopters.

Air filters? Clogged much? I wouldn't risk it. But then, I am chicken about flying at the best of times, so what do I know.

That, and it would probably awaken the bigger volcano near the one sending out the ash.

And the not smoking. And the having to wear clothes. And the having nowhere to plug yer Mac Pro in. And the not having an accessible bidet. And that bloke three rows back who's spending an inordinate amount of time messing with his shoes.

I wonder what the world would look like if planes had never have been invented? I guess we'll find out if this carries on for much longer.
