OK, I am at a friends house and they have.. OS 8.1... No hopes for OS X, but do you think I should install OS 9? There seems to be no hardware limits... They have a Power Macintosh G3 266 MHz. And.. 32 MB of RAM

Virtual memory is currently on at 42 MB. I put it up at 128MB but haven't restarted yet. Is there a limit onto how high I should be? 999 is allowed but that would be ridiculous. The higher the virtual memory, the more memory you have.. but the slower it gets.. correct?

So what do you think? Should I upgrade it to OS 9 for them? I've already suggested more memory and they've decided they'll double it to 64MB since they heard that anything more would be unsafe?.. True or not? Also, OS 9 needs 8.5. Can that be downloaded freely or will they need a CD or what? Seems like it would seem to be a little pointless (annoying) to have to buy 8.5 just to use 9. I will search Apple right now for 8.5 and then you can all post your insights

Have them get A min of 128 Megs of RAM or more. 9.x will thank you for it and so will they.I think you can install 9.2 for them, You should be able to use the 9.x CD that came with your computer. I know I got like 6 CD's with my iBook and I installed the 9.2.2 from the OS 9 CD that came with it. It should not be a problem. If you have OS 9 just use Toast and Burn them a BOOTABLE copy of it and install it and give them the copy so that they will have a backup if they need to re-install. 8.5 is not a Free update. You need to buy it. Let me know if you want it or when you need it by. I have a Copy of Every OS since 7.6.1. I know 9.x will install on that Machine. The only thing you need to remember is that you may need to update some of there aps when they update to 8.5-9.x .

Luckily I misread the document. You only need 8.5 when installing over a network. You can basically install over any OS when booting up from the CD, which I did. Now it's running nice and smooth. Anti-aliasing and 32 bit icons.. yum.. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> As for the RAM, that's really helpful, I'll have to suggest that to them, any good places to get RAM? I heard it was really cheap a while back but went up, is this true? I'll be leaving in about 2 hours though I'll probably come back later. Again, thanks a lot.

If you go the route of 9, definitely install more ram (even if you don't decide to upgrade, still install more RAM!) It will make for a much better computing experience. Ram is incredibly inexpensive right now (256MB should run between $30-$40).
Personally, i would upgrade to at least OS9. With each version upgrade (whether full or incremental), Apple finds ways to improve the operatingsystem, either adding enhancements to existing features, or totally new features(which will be the case with an upgrade from 8 to 9)

Put as much RAM as you can. Unsafe? No...

OS9 does not need 8.5, if you have a copy of it on CD.
