I think that Foxconn has a LOT of 'splainin' to do! A LOT of it.

Apple has more class than to do something like this intentionally. Foxconn, on the other hand...

Fantastic.
For people that don't read the site, the full quote is
"As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it."

"...and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it." More to the point, isn't it?

And to everyone else here, there's no reason to get childish about this. How does someone else using Windows affect anyone here at all? Let's get over it and start discussing what it means about Apple products, ok?

Windows being vulnerable to viruses is bad. The manufacture of Apple products being vulnerable to sabotage is far worse.

I don't think it has anything to do with us since we use Macs

I think it means that the Foxconn people may have a few tricks up their sleeves. I think it means that we (and Apple) need to be very attentive to what's going on with iPods. While there aren't any viruses for Mac OS out in the wild right now, that doesn't mean that they don't exist. How would it be if Foxconn popped a nasty bit of code onto a bunch of iPods that hosed up Macs running OS X?

Wiskedjak's observation is very appropriate here-Apple depends on third parties to build all their equipment, and thus has been victimized in this situation. This is BAD. What if the next bit of sabotage hurts Mac OS?

took long enough, this is finally on CNN. no additional facts though.

didn't this happen with a flash drive in the past though. I am certain this is not the first time a product has shipped with a virus.

Creative shipped a player about a year ago with a virus.

McDonalds last week recalled 10,000 players shipped with a virus.

Not required. Follow the directions on Apple's site (link given above). Basically you just format the iPod and set it up from scratch.

The virus is just on the drive if I read things correctly...not at all involved in the firmware. And a simple "restore" rewrites the firmware and formats the drive so that takes care of all of it anyway.

Doesn't it show up on the HD if you opt to use it as a HD?

Are you confused by the word "cock-up"? Or what?

cock-up
noun Brit., informal
something done badly or inefficiently : we've made a total cock-up of it.

Well, isn't that why Apple recommends users do a "restore", which reformats the iPod?
