I downloaded the trial of SS today on my Macbook. I used CB a few years ago on a PowerMac, but can't remember a whole lot about it. I was wondering what the differences would be? Which is better as far as features and reliability? Also, is there a way to change the system icons (Finder, Trash) in SS without having to get into more in depth hacking?

CandyBar has been updated quickly with every incremental update to OS X. It works correctly 99% of the time. It's simple and straightforward.
I suppose you could say the same for ShapeShifter, but since theming has pretty-much been left for dead*, it seems like overkill.
Given a choice between the two, I'd go for CandyBar.

CandyBar changes icons. Shapeshifter skins the whole user interface.

Yeah you can't really 'vs' them because they do different things.
While the theming has been slow lately that doesn't mean you can't enjoy all previously made themes for Tiger.

Get shapeshifter, most of the profiles you download come with icon sets, and it only screws up candybar more, it happened to me, I still havn't fixed it.

I'd like to think it's the suspense/idea of Leopard completely killing it anyway.
