cmmnd-shift-3 for the whole screen.
cmmnd-shift-4 makes a crosshair; you hold the mouse down & drag it, make a box of what you want a picture of...
have fun!

Also try holding down the control key to copy your screenshots to the clipboard instead... much more usefull I find.

I believe if you add "caps lock" to that, you can click the top of a window to take a picture of just that window.
I think these are listed in Mac Help under "Keyboard Shortcuts".

Apple+Shift+3 = screenshot
Apple+Shift+3+Capslock = screenshot window
Apple+Shift+3+Control = screenshot to clipboard
Apple+Shift+3+Control+Capslock = screenshot window to clipboard
Apple+Shift+4 = drag area
Apple+Shift+4+Control = drag area, save to clipboard
Thats most of them I think...

Nice list. I did not have all memorized.
One thing you can do is download the free extension Desktop Screenshots. This causes screenshots to be sent to the Desktop instead of the hard drive root.
