I've never heard this one but I think it might fit the bill of Albums not to listen to when depressed/drinking
This is from the track listing:

6. Raisin' the Rent - Roy Bargy _ _
7. Sittin' on a Rubbish Can _
11. Hallelujah, I'm a Bum
14. How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?
17. 35 Depression_
19. It's Hard Time
23. Welfare Store Blues _ _
24. Poor But Ambitious

Unplugged in New York when depressed and drinking?! Hmmm....I mean, it's soft and melodic, which is great, but I've never thought of it as depressing or anything.
I can't really help you. I've got a lot of sad stuff, but I'm rarely depressed, although as a Newfie university student I drink on a regular basis. And I LOVE soft, sad albums.

I think the fact that he killed himself plays in to the whole thing... but I'm not sure... The last two songs always get to me... All Apologies and Where Did You Sleep Last Night just due me in, but it may be that I was a freshman in college when it came out and depressed as hell, but it could have been all the alcohol I was drinking...

"Depressed" and "drinking" are very different things.
Something never to listen to while depressed... "Still", by Nine Inch Nails. It has moments which could end you, if you're that kind of person.
"Everything I Long For", by Hayden, would be an even worse idea. Great album, though.
I dunno. There aren't many full albums like that... it's the homemade compilations which can get extreme

Nah, I think that listening to beautiful, really sad music actually helps improve my mood when I'm depressed. Playing something sort of melancholy gives me the feeling that I can relate to it. Following it up with something a bit more optimistic does wonders.
Now, playing something really perky when I'm in a lousy mood - that makes me get sort of frustrated and bitter. Dunno why. Playing sad music first provides the necessary "catharsis of emotions" necessary to clear the mind enough to introduce something to change the mood. Plus, your attention level is heightened, allowing you to appreciate the subtle beauties more. IMHO.
Many of Chopin's slower short pieces, such as some of the more introverted of the mazurkas (I like Op. 17, No. 4) are great for this.

Just listening to nine inch nails has made me want to kill myself. Or at the very least gouge my ear drums out to block the noise.

Good for you. Can I lend a hand with that ear-gouging?
I bet you can't name a single song off the album without looking it up.
Go listen to some Jet or something.

Not all the songs are depressing, it's just the way he sings them in that jeff buckley style,
When depressed listen to "grace" by Jeff Buckley that will bring you out of your blues!

Certain PJ harvey and Ani Difranco songs are just suicide waiting to happen.
NIN is great for feeling down, but you want to get angry about it. PJ when you're down just brings you further down.

Putting "Black" by Pearl Jam on, and leaving it on Repeat... after a bad break-up with a GF of 2 years and the death of my estranged father (in the same week), while drinking heavily, in the dark. I actually pulled a gun (loaded S&W .45) out and placed it on the bed, then stared at it for a couple hours.

Jet?!?! Ha ha... you're a funny boy. Funny boy.
Dude, just accept the fact that people don't like what you do.
Personally, I'd rather gouge my ears out than listen to Trent Reznor moan and wail.
And you don't like Jet. (neither do I, by the way.)
I prefer good old fashioned rock like The Replacements, Heather Nova, The Church, and many more.

It's not that. It's the ignorance that accompanies it.
Okay, fair enough, you may not like Broken. The Downward Spiral is different. Don't like that either? The Fragile is different, again.
Unlike so many artists out there, NIN is ever-evolving.
Even then, fair enough, you don't like the general sound - okay. That's cool.
That's why I mentioned Still. It's a very, very different album.
I was more specifically talking about the instrumental tracks, such as "Adrift and at Peace", and "Gone, Still", and so forth.
There are four beautiful instrumental tracks on that album ("Gone, Still", "Leaving Hope", "The Persistence of Loss", and "Adrift and at Peace"), along with two stunning, soft tracks, vocals included (the remake of "Something I Can Never Have", and "And All That Could Have Been").
Judging any one NIN album based upon any other is one thing (though still unfair), but judging Still based upon any other NIN album is unacceptable.

for good taste in utterly depressing music. Joy Division was popular in the early to mid 80's and I remember listening to it during a particularly depressed phase in 1985. The lead singer went on to kill himself, leaving one to only ask oneself why he hadn't done it earlier considering his style of music and his black as night lyrics. Never listened to it again.
For more modern depressing music, I think some Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots' stuff was up to the task in the early to mid 90's.
As for CharlesS' comment on melancholic music sometimes acting as a catharsis for letting go of sadness, I agree whole heartedly and can heartily recommend Bach's Violin Concerto Nr2 in E. First two movements can be listened to on Amazon.
