Why 2 strokes of anything instead of just one click?

Was there ever a "New Tab" button in Safari by default? There were apps that added this, but it was never part of Safari to my knowledge.

I truly don't think I'm asking for much..
And yes, yesterday (prior to Leopard) I had a 'New Tab" button on Safari. Can't remember how I came about it but regardless.. I used it a lot. And now it's gone.

Why 1-click on anything when the computer could accurately GUESS when you want to open a tab. Think about it.
But seriously...I don't think the option exists because it's a silly functionality. Even Hyatt on the Safari and WebKit dev team must deeply believe it even though he's the one that started this whole 'tabbed-browsing' mess.
Tabbed-browsing in Windows and Linux, an excellent idea because of poor window management. Tabbed-browsing on Macs, an unnecessary thing because of excellent window management.

Hyatt started tabbed browsing? Unlikely. Safari was released without tabs among a flurry of other tab-enabled browsers like Mozilla, Firefox and Camino (or whatever it was called back then). They were forced to add it (against their wishes - for the same reasons you state) because of user demands.

Hyatt did start tabbed browsing, just not with Safari.
From Surfin' Safari
I've seen a lot of comments in various Mac forums where people have claimed that "Dave Hyatt said he doesn't like tabbed browsing!" or "Dave Hyatt hates tabbed browsing!" I find these posts perplexing, because I never said any such thing, and of course the opposite is true. I love tabbed browsing. I implemented tabbrowser in the Mozilla trunk. I implemented tabbed browsing in Chimera. I implemented the version used in Phoenix. Given how many times I've implemented it, I'm amazed that people would think that I am not a tabbed browsing devotee.

That does not imply that he "started" tabbed browsing as in he invented it, merely that he had implemented it before.
Hyatt also did not make Safari on his own you know, and he did not work on the UI at all

Were there any other browsers with tabbed browsing before any of those? If no, he started it.
I never said he made Safari on his own nor that he worked on the UI.

A little bit of research helps:
The first real tabbed browser with any significant presence on the web was Netcaptor, created by the very talented Adam Stiles way back in 1997.
The next major implementation of tabbed browsing was the work of HJ van Rantwijk with MultiZilla, a tabbed browsing extension for Mozilla that copied pretty much everything that Adam had done in Netcaptor. HJ launched this extension for Mozilla back in 2000.
In September of 2001, Dave Hyatt added a tabbed browsing mode to Mozilla. This feature was release in Mozilla 0.9.5 in October of 2001
In December of 2001, Opera Software released version 6 of its Opera browser which was the first version to contain a genuined tabbed browsing mode (along with its SDI and MDI modes).
In September of 2002, Phoenix 0.1 (which would eventually be renamed to Firefox) shipped its first release which contained the most usable tabbed browsing implemenatation to date ;-)
In January of 2003, Apple introduced the Safari web browser which contained a very nice tabs implemenation.
In May of 2005, Microsoft announced that IE 7 (due later in the year) would have a tabbed browsing interface. The MSN team at Microsoft shipped a tabs-capable toolbar for IE 6 in June of 2005.

You can get a new tab with a single-click by using the File menu.

The (mere) term "tab-browsing" doesn't even make sense to me. (Not on Wikki yet)
They're tabs for crying out loud! What does browsing have to do with 'em?
It's just a darn 'new tab' button I'm waiting for...
Oh wait, there's a "Open this Page In Dashboard" button...
Lol!

The fact of the matter is, it's a button that every other browser has by default. You may not think of it like this, but it's a feature that Safari simply doesn't have, and every other browser on earth does. Even IE7 has a one-click new tab solution. Safari simply doesn't.

I swore for a second that you said '...with proper biblical references.' I'd love to read that.

Maybe Safari should have six toolbars with two dozen buttons each just so it can really be like a Microsoft app!

I use TwiceTab so a double click in the tab bar opens a new tab. That works good enough for me.

Hold down the command key when you press return in the address field or Google search and you will open them in a new tab.

You could add one using Safari Enhancer, don't know if that's updated for Leopard though. And I also miss it - I have lots of bookmarks in my Bookmarks Bar and having a new tab button is handy.
