Hey guys,

Quick note to say Tag 1.0 has been released, below is a feature summary:

Creating a website is a tedious business, you experience a never-ending cycle of writing code, making changes and previewing it. Enter Tag, the intuitive XHTML editor with tons of features to keep your eyes on what's important, your code.

Live Preview
Most editors require you to experience the same cycle every time. Save work, switch to FTP client, upload, switch to browser and the cycle continues till your web page is perfect. Just think how much time you will save if you use Tag and its Live Preview functionality. Tag eliminates the whole switching cycle and puts it all into a convenient one-window interface.

Code Styles
Tag incorporates an intelligent syntax coloring system, is there a language you would like to write your code in, but Tag doesn't have a syntax definition for? Then make it yourself, by creating a simple file, you can now code with your new syntax coloring. And if you like, you can share your definition with the masses.

Auto Complete
Writing code is a tedious task. You seem to be typing the same bits of code over and over again. With Tag's auto-complete features, your productivity will be increased many times over.

Snippets
With Tag's snippets feature, you can store your most used portions of code in a simple to use interface. If you require more power, why not attach a key command to a snippet, allowing you to quickly insert code into your website. Also available are 3 variables, allowing you to further extend the power of your snippets.

This is not all, Tag is the perfect Mac OS X citizen, featuring high quality, photo-realistic icons and a ultra-usable interface. It is available to buy for $19.95.

Hope you all like it, to see more please visit http://www.talacia.com.

Thanks,
Oliver

This is a very nice HTML editing app; the best of its type. Light weight, very Aqua friendly, and has some neat features that puts it over the average text editor.

However.

You know what would be really cool? An XCode style projects feature that would manage a site for you. With resources, etc. Now that would be truly revolutionary for an HTML editor...

I don't like to hint at things anymore (I announced Tag way too early), but a future update should feature Xcode like projects. Thats my next big aim, I see it as a missing market on OS X.

Thanks,
Oliver

Except maybe for autocomplete, all those features are available for free in Taco HTML Edit. I don't see why this app is worth $20.

Well, Tag does have advanced snippets with dynamic variables, Regex searching, a help browser, and a cool interface.

Personally, I'm a GUI man, so the interface difference means a lot to me. And Tag is just a cooler name than Taco. 'nuf said.

I guess whether it's worth $20 is up to you. But I think Tag has a good future, and it's extremely well thought out, so it's a pleasure to use. Considering the number of hours you might spend in an HTML editor working on a website, $20 might be worth it just for the good experience!

Hum, Live preview, code hinting, Auto complete, Snipets. I think I may give a combination of this and CSSEdit a go instead of Dreamwever for Web Dev.
The live preview will load any changes made to the external CSS file won't it, Dreamwever has a tendency to cash the CSS file, even when previewing in an external browser.

Yep, the live preview will load the external CSS file and will not cache it. I had some trouble getting this to work, but it should work

Thanks,
Oliver

Well, its a case of what you want and need. Some people like a nice looking GUI and might use it more over an app with an ugly GUI (which may also be less usable). I mean, some people use OS X for its beautiful GUI, so why not take advantage of it?

For example, I don't need all those wizards in Taco HTML, but then again, someone else might use them useful.

Tag can be used to your advantage in many ways, but the most useful has to be snippets. For example, if your one who inserts a lot of div's or tables into a document, you could setup a snippet like:

<div class="<%cursor%>">
<%currentselection%>
</div>

This would auto-magically place your cursor in between the quotes and place your current selection in between the divs. You could also attach a key command to it, so you don't even have to bring the panel forward (this is a limitation of Taco, you can only have 10 shortcuts).

Thanks,
Oliver

i've thought the same for a while. if you know what you're doing, you can easily get away with using those two apps, over Doomweaver.

A table palette or some such would be nice as well as a lite version property inspector for things like images and links (path, img size and link values, etc)

But honestly, the one single feature that would be the ABSOLUTE CAT'S PAJAMAS would be an app at this level (price point) that respects and can display PHP include and and required elements in the preview.

To my knowledge the only app that can do this is DWwhich is why I still use it.

As much as I'd love to break and use this and CSSEditthat is the one thing that keeps me coming back to DW.

Duly noted, will be worked on for 1.1.

Who needs those when you have drag and drop . Drag an image, stylesheet or HTML file onto the TextView and Tag will complete most fields for you.

Hyperedit does this. But it too costs $20.

I've toyed with Tag a few minutes and it looks very interesting. The PHP syntax coloring and auto-complete are very welcome features, and the built-in browser with customizable bookmarks (and a rather nice set of pre-configured ones) is a nice touch (even though it would be even better with a search box with configurable search sites, i.e. the PHP and MySQL manuals).

Unfortunately, the auto-complete performance on this machine (G4 400) is absolutely unusable. Typing at normal speeds results in jerky screen updates (about once a second) and the occasional spinning beachball.

The live preview feature is good if you work with static HTML, but if you work (for example) with PHP and MySQL you still have to go through the save/upoad/reload cycle. If Tag could speed up that process in some way it would be a most welcome feature.

Overall Tag looks like a solid and polished 1.0 release, and if I had a faster maching I'd probably test it more extensively, but right now I'll stick with SubEthaEdit.

I don't find the performance really lags too much, but I can't get it to work well at all. It autocompletes my tags, but I have to finish typing or the next thing I type will just be typed over them. I tried looking in the help to see if there was a "Jump to end of word" shortcut I was missing, but that just opened talacia.com in Safari. Weirdest of all, autocomplete causes words to become jumbled on my (admittedly ancient) machine. At first I thought I was just getting lazy with my typing, but then I realized that every time I typed <div>, it became <dvi> even typing one-fingered so that typos are impossible.

Tag definitely has potential, but it's not getting my pizza money just yet.

Hmm weird, an Auto Complete rewrite is defiantly on my agenda. I will look into the dvi problem.

I'm currently testing on an iMac 350MHZ G3 and auto-complete is instant.

Set the preview update rate to "manual". That helps on old machines, and lets face it a G4 400 is old right now

That should help for now. Hopefully threading it will help (which is what I am attempting).

A few thoughts...

If no changes are made to a document it still asks whether or not to save. It would be better if it recognised no changes were made like other apps.

Is it possible to have an option to put the live preview slider draw thing to the right instead of below? This would be better on my iBook.

The crayon icon for the auto complete preference pane is cool but I associate it more with syntax colouring. This would be better if it were a replica of SEE's Edit preference pane where you can change editing options per language. I think the disable/enable button should be a general preference.

The preview does not load changes to an external css file that has been saved when in auto mode, only a manual refresh does the job. I'd imagine this would be easier to implement when the "project/resource manager" is included.

And bugs...

- When selecting "Hide Live Preview" from the menu, it does not change to "Show".
- Selecting "XHTML & CSS" auto complete only displays "XHTML & CS".

Otherwise good, a nice GUI. However it seems daft to spend money on this as a web editor and CSSEdit when I can get SEE for free.

Very Nice Oliver!

A Few things I would like to see:

The Xcode like interface talked about earlier with the ability to define a site so that absolute URLS would work. I lot of my pages won't currently work because I use absolute URLs for things like my external style sheets.

Templates, like your snippets would be very cool. The ability to have templates like Dreamweaver does would be one of the things that gets me out of DW. I currently do most of my coding in SubEtha and CSSEdit then when done switch over to DW for file management and its powerful templates. Also since DW templates are just HTML files with special tags maybe you could even support DW templates along with your own so people could easily switch over.

On and the ability to take lines of text and create a ordered list, I do that all the time to create navigation.

Also with auto-complete would it be possible to have it show all the possible tags when you hit space and not require you to start typing?

External stylesheets should work, maybe try hitting refresh? I'll have a look into the ordered list thing, someone else requested this.

I'll have a look into positioning the split view differently, might not be too hard. For external stylesheets to work, you need to clear the cache. Clearing the cache while typing would cause bad lag, I think most WebView developers use the same idea. I'll fix those bugs you mentioned.

Thanks,
Oliver

What I'm saying is that, something like this will work:
<link href="vineyard.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="all"/> or
<link href="../../vineyard.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="all"/>

However something like:
<link href="/vineyard.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="all"/>
Won't since it is going all they way back to the HD to find the file and not the root folder that I have created.

Well, without some form of site management, this really isn't possible - there needs to be a point of reference. Dreamweaver does this by virtually defining a certain directory on your HDD to be the root level of the web server - I assume when Oliver gets around to adding the site management features, Tag will work similarly.

Wow, sounds like a great update! I really wish I had a web project to test Tag on... unfortunately I kind of lost interest after witnessing the hardcore CSS coding by Jan and graphics by Adam for MacThemes. My own little projects just aren't the same anymore.

I dunno if you're familiar with Tiger or Safari 1.3, but have you been evaluating the new features of WebKit? Notably the user-editability of rendered HTML? Like being able to text tags and all that? Note Millennium if you're reading this, this seems to be the whole Midas technology you've been harping about no?

Very nice app.

One bug I immediately noticed, which no doubt you already know about but i'm going to mention it anyway, is that the line numbering disappears when you open the preference window.

So, why did you decide to change company names?

And have you got an announcement about Domain Tracker?

Tag just stopped working, I can't open any files or make new ones. I get this in console: 2004-07-14 09:45:09.097 Tag[5114] *** -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (0) beyond bounds (0)

EDIT: I copied it out of the disc image again and it works....odd.

On another note.... any information on that Xcode type interface? (Can you tell I want to get away from Dreamweaver, )

I've been looking at the new WebKit features (although not doing too much research) I hear there was a WWDC session about HTML editing in WebKit, I'll have to dig some stuff up. I've been having ideas about how HTML code could be layed out differently (not just plain text). Although not fully original, I was maybe thinking of have a table view display all the available tags in rows. And when you click one, it shows you the tag in a text view below.

My other idea is that, say for example you have a standard img tag:

<img src="Whatever.gif" height="10" width="20" />

But instead of Tag displaying it like that, it would display it like Mail objects are. So you'd see a little drop down menu saying 'Whatever.gif', if you then clicked on it, a little panel would appear (maybe with some neat CoreImage effects ) and you could edit like the size, or alt.

Line Numbers are a being (pardon my french) a bitch in Tag. They disagree with everything in the app and are just slow. I am rewriting Line Numbers for 1.5 (which is the big rewrite).

Domain Tracker is being developed at the moment, not sure when its going to be released though.

The Xcode type interface is coming along with projects. But I'm making no promises as to when .

Thanks,

I am really really liking this software after playing with it for a day. I'd request Toolbar button to activate the DOCTYPE, MetaTag, and Table Assistants, and of course the popular project system.

Behold the holy trinity of Mac shareware web development: Transmit, CSSEdit, and Tag!

I forgot a few more requests:

1. Clicking the Snippets toolbar icon when the Snippets window is open should close the window, as in toggle on and off.

2. Make the project management portion TOTALLY optional, I really like how the editor is now and I'd hate to have to modify my workflow around a project management system when I want to edit one document.

3. Tabbed Interface (ala HomeSite). Make similar to how Safari handles tabs, allow multiple windows and multiple tabs within those windows. Might be an interesting way to manage projects as well

Hi,

There is already a toolbar item. If you right-click on the toolbar, and 'Customize Toolbar...' you should see an item called 'Assistants'. Drag that in, and you can open them from there.

Thanks,
Oliver

Thanks for the requests:

1. The snippets behavior could be implemented, but I'm not sure this is correct with the Aqua HIG (I'll look into it).

2. The project option is going to be exactly how you say, optional. There will be a small button in the editor window where you can open the projects window, and thus create a new project.

3. Tabbed interface is a feature planned for 1.5, it should look exactly like Safari (minus brushed metal).

Thanks,
Oliver

Aah I'm smart, I guess I was too bent on finding individual icons to see that!

That sounds great! 1.5 is going to rock! I'm going to buy tag as soon as your new IceCold site goes online!

What more could you want? A developer that listens and is so far ahead he's already covering requests

Don't want to sound rude , but you can still buy Tag at the Talacia website:

http://www.talacia.com/store.php
