Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) - Rotten Tomatoes
As of this writing it's sitting at 39% with an avg rating of 5.5 out of 10, while Metacritic has it at a lackluster 47%. That's depressing, but it's what I feared. The consensus appears to be that they tried to smash too much into a 2 hour film and made an incoherent mess of it. In their mad rush to get to the Justice League movie they neglected to make this one worthwhile. Sure, I'll still go see it, and will ultimately make my own decision regarding it, but this does take down my expectations several pegs (which will probably help me get at least some enjoyment out of it).

The good news that I'm hearing is that Ben Affleck did really well as Batman. Many are writing that he's their favorite on-screen Wayne/Batman, period. That excites me for future films. I never really understood the massive backlash when he was announced as the new Batman.
He even looks so much more like the Batman from the comics:
Dark hair, Batman's jawline, right build, correct scruff, looks like an intelligent rich boy.
Meanwhile:
- Michael Keaton: looks like a doofus. Not handsome. Not physically imposing.
- Val Kilmer: weirdo, blonde.
- George Clooney: just looks like George Clooney. Never seemed like the character.
- Christian Bale: a bit too short, didn't buy his Bruce Wayne — zero personality.

Yeah, I haven't been hearing anything good for weeks. If my friends want to see it, I'll join them. But I'm not going to ask if anyone wants to see it.
On the other hand, Civil War looks magnificent.

I'm. It a fan of either character and have been more fond of their cartoon characters more, but I was planning on seeing it. Perhaps not now.

I think we have room to negotiate. I'll agree to change "bad movies" to "movies that are not good", if you agree that "okay" does not mean "good"?
I mean, that's as far as I can go: maybe not all of his movies are bad...some of them are okay, but none of them are good.

Reviews are coming in, and it is pretty bad in general, with the exception of Affleck's performance. Personally I didn't expect much after Man of Steel.

Yep. Saw it and it's a loud, poorly-written, jumbled mess of a movie. Even my lowered expectations were largely unmet. With all the money, source material to pull from, and motivation behind it, how did this get made? No, it's not as bad as Fantastic 4 (2015), but it's not much better, either.

He had the "look" for that role as well but he was so physically uncoordinated in the action scenes that it was just painful to watch. I'm hopeful that his Batman performance will redeem him in the superhero genre.

Half day off so we went to see it.
Visually is was great. The story however was garbage.
Character interpretation and development was even worse.
Affleck isn't my favorite person but he did a decent job. Irons was also interesting but a departure on previous Alfreds and vasty inferior to Caine's.
The studio should fire Zack Snyder. He is really not the right person to be at the head of these franchises.

Warner Bros damage control is going nuts, the amount of astroturfing on social media is insane. Literally 1000s of new accounts are springing up praising this trainwreck of a movie.
Ex. "OMG! THIS MOVIE IS SOOO AWESOME! BEST SUPER HERO MOVIE EVER!!" Said "Mark Jackson", who apparently made a brand new Twitter account last night (including profile image), just to post that one tweet. Riiiight...

I've been watching the audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. 30% critic score, mid-70s audience. Lots of short 4-5 star reviews. Longer reviews tend to have fewer stars. It certainly looks like packing.
Example short 5-star review: Matthew L (RT profile page not found, just like a bunch of other short high-star reviews)
Fantastic movie, I enjoyed every minute of it and can't wait to see the future DC titles.

Apparently Wonder Woman comes out of the wreck pretty OK.
Was planning on rushing to see this, have now relegated it to "when I have a spare afternoon"
It may sink to "when iTunes rents it for cheap"

Those were the fans buying tickets. Let's see how week 2 works out.
"That ranks as the top opening weekend for a DC Comics film, the best March launch ever, and the sixth biggest domestic opening weekend of all-time."
A "DC Comics Film" doesn't mean much, really.
Also, "Sixth biggest..." - accounting for inflation? No.

The overall quality of a film doesn't mean much for the first couple weekends. But it plays a huge role in whether a movie will have legs (repeat viewing). Unlike Deadpool and most of the MCU properties, BvS will be dead after 2 weeks.

No one has mentioned Jesse Eisenberg, and his take on Lex Luthor. Some may have a different opinion, however, I couldn't stop myself from thinking how wrong he was for the part. For me it was one of the most glaringly off parts of a disappointing movie.

Did I say 2 weeks? Try 2 days. Ouch!
BvS suffers worst Fri>Sun drop in the history of the genre.

How can they spend so much money, get the look right, get the actors (mostly) right, and then mess it up? Argh.
Plot matters.

Director matters. Sometimes people seem to forget that when it comes to genre movies or something in a series (Bond in particular), but to get a good movie, you need a director who knows what they're doing.

Yeah, I saw it, but it never affected my opinion as to the job he'd do with Batman, since ALL of Daredevil sucked. It was just a bad movie, all the way around.

The consensus is that all the little psychotic twitching and mannerisms don't fit Lex Luthor. It seems like he was trying to be slightly more Heath Ledger's Joker instead of Luthor.

From what I can tell, up to 40% isn't too bad, with 33% being the median. 55% is a disaster.

Yeah that's really bad. But think about it the his way. The market has just been inundated with superhero movies. There was a time when it was a "thing" because we might only have one or two a year. Now it seems like every few months there's another one being released. I suspect the general market is getting pretty worn out on the genre. So it's really only the diehard comic book fans going to see these type of movies in the theater these days.

Deadpool is a clear indicator that good superhero movies still do very well, BvS was just crappy. Wouldn't surprise me if the former outperforms the latter by the time their runs end, despite the massive budget difference (and BvS having the more family-friendly rating).

I just watched Batman vs. Superman.
I don't think the problem is with the movie per say, it's following the comic book lines of all of these civil wars, having to pick a side, alliances, cooperations when there is an even bigger and more evil enemy, etc. The Marvel Civil War movie coming up will be doing the same thing, and I anticipate it will be about the same disappointment. I liked the first Avengers okay, but because it was silly and lighthearted.
The problem, IMO, is that there is simply no opportunity to develop the characters, their motivations, their stories, etc. These movies end up basically being about powers combining to fight stuff and make stuff explode. Even the music is formulaic and unimaginative compared to the John Williams scores that actually featured interesting melodies. There just isn't much plot material to draw from, but I think the only choices are to do the civil war thing, or keep inventing new super heroes. I don't think that you can keep making sequels to superhero movies exploring individual characters and expect them to sell.
IOW, I think the superhero movie thing is just done to death now. They'll keep making new ones until they stop selling, but I don't think there is really much to be excited about anymore.
I did like Batman vs. Superman briefly exploring the idea of a God living among men, that was kind of an interesting plot device, but then the movie just devolved into the usual fighting the big powerful bad guy and making bore explode formula. Transformers but with human figures rather than robots.

‘Batman vs. Superman’ R-Rated Edition May Come to Theaters
I was kinda surprised to learn that WB is in the tank close to $450M for this film, counting everything. Once the theater shares are taken into account (it's worse for them overseas, where they only make 30-50%, unlike the US where it's closer to 70), it won't make money until it breaks $800M. So, that means a second release, but this time coming in at >3 hours with an R rating. However, I don't believe that can fix the core problems with it, and in some cases will make them worse (Batman is portrayed as even more of a homicidal maniac).

Forget the plot entirely, not that hard to do since it's practically nonexistent. Forget everything you know about the characters from the comics, and watch it for the action and FX. Pretend it isn't Batman or Superman, but some new property entirely. That might help.

I still think that the movie studios are kind of at the end of their rope with what they can do with these comic book stories. These hero alliance/conflict stories just seem like they will gravitate towards Transformers-style cinematography without really developing these characters and their complex motivations like you can in the comic books.

I guess the exception is the X-Men stories, they are all about hero alliance/conflict stories, but frankly I'm not sure how many of those movies you can make either (although I really enjoyed the Future Past movie).
