Program in OS X to show hidden files?

Without resorting to OS 9, what's the easiest way to see hidden files in OS X?
I downloaded a file to my desktop named .xxxx etc. and it promptly disappeared.
I recall using some finder-like programs that would do this, I can't remember the names.

Tinkertool immediately comes to mind. Ditto for PathFinder.
Prolly some terminal commands too but I dont know which..

from memory tinker tool has an option to show hidden files. i currently don't have it installed but i used to and remember the option quite well.

tinkertool, bbedit, transmit, cocktail, can't remember the CLI command for that.

Just type that into the 'old terminal in the proper directory.
Then, if you wanna rename the file,
Just gotta be careful because OS X won't confirm with you if you're overwriting an existing file.
I guess this isn't really a program, but eyh, it works.

To find one specific file like this you could just use Find ( CMD - F ) in the finder.
Tell it to search in specific places and choose your desktop.
Set the criteria to search for files with visibility off.
Only problem with this is you can't tell it not to do a recursive search so it will also look in any folders you have on your Desktop.

The latest version of Unsanity's Fruitmenu will (I'm pretty sure) show hidden files under the contextual menu. Am not on my Mac at the moment so can't verify this (perhaps someone else could) but am sure I saw something about this when I installed the latest version last night.

Yeah, I just saw that option yesterday in FruitMenu 3 but I haven't tried it either.

Back home now; it works a treat.
Unsanity stuff is cool.
