I'm upgrading my PB HD so need a 2.5" firewire enclosure.

I've been searching hi and low for a nice one to compliment my 17" PB but can't find one anywhere. The only ones i have seen are USB only. (bloody pc's/windows)

Anyone know of any nice ones?

I'm surprised that no one has suggested you look at Other World Computing. they have some very nice products for Macs, including hd enclosures

I am using an OWC FW 400 enclosure and a FW 800 (MicroGB+) from wiebe tech. Both are flawless.

My tip - save a few bucks and stick with a FW400 enclosure. The PB's internal drives (4200rpm) are so slow that a FW800 connection will not have any speed advantages over a FW400 one.

Well im comitted now. I've bought an 80GB 5,400rpm Travelstar so ive gotta find an enclosure!

Also whilst sufing the net last night i saw something about oxford chip sets.

Are they necessary? If they are then thats another thing to add to my growing list!

Ok it's not that long, but every one narrows the list a bit, mainly the firewire option, as there's loads of cool simple enclosures out there but they are aimed at PC users and are only U S bloody B!

Oxford chipsets are what you will likely get with any enclosure kit anyway (it's the dominant brand of controller chip for the firewire port).

Okay guys, I've been staring at this for a few hours and things are starting to look all the same, please help:

I'm looking for 2 drive enclosures.

1. For the 4500 60gb drive coming out of my 17" revision A powerbook. I'm stuffing a new 100gb Seagate Momentus into my 17 and want an aluminum, FW400 enclosure for this drive. Something like this:

Will this work? It's too late on Friday to call the company directly so I was hoping someone can pipe up over the weekend.

2. I have two Hitachi Deskstar 250gb SATA drives I bought for my pending G5 (whenever they bump the cpu). Since it's been gathering dust, I thought I'd stuff 'em into an enclosure and get some use out of them. I'd like an enclosure w/ FW800, maybe something that will hold BOTH drives.

Any ideas? I *think* this one might work:

But it is starting to look like it is an SATA interface only.

Both of the drives above look pretty handsome. I'd like something that's not too hideous to look at since it'll be sitting on my desk

Does anyone carry a 120GB 7,200 RPM HD that fits in PB?

I use the Momobay CX-1. This is the older version w/o USB 2.0.

USB-use is flawless, but the port on the drive has a plastic frame only. It deteriorates what leads to a loose fit of the plug. Also I wonder if the port is some kind of a proprietary mini format. Sooner or later will abandon this enclosure.

FW-mounting is not perfect on OS 9.2.2 (Storagelnxy chipset). It works better with the enclosed driver. Data rate is about 10 MByte/s on a Pismo 500.

Today I would prefer an Oxford 911 chipset for FW. In fact I am considering the clear-coat-design enclosure offered on Newertech.com even though it is not as slim as the Momobay, but has a standard USB-plug. For such a plug a cable is always available.

If you want a drive that complements the PB, you'll like the G-Drive -- although I've not seen it available as an empty enclosure.

I've not seen an enclosure that will take a SATA drive and give you a FireWire interface... but G-TECH do have an external drive that has a SATA interface:

I bought the HD separately. It takes me 5 minutes to install the HD into it.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'm looking for a new enclosure for my external disk, and I'm a bit unfamiliar with the issues involved. I've seen some enclosures offered in either self-powered or bus-powered versions. On the face of it, bus-powered seems like a no-brainer, but are there any disadvantages (other than draining the battery quicker when mobile)? Is data throughput the same on a bus-powered enclosure?

I assume there wouldn't be any problem just swapping my drive from one enclosure to another with my data intact, is this correct? I'd be going from USB 2.0 to FW 800, if that makes a difference.

I've not seen any FW800 bus-powered drives, just FW400/USB -- so if they really don't exist then that would be a throughput limitation.
