He was a superb musician who touched lot of lives. I find him particularly inspirational because he managed to do what he did without the use of his eyes, and still managed to look normal when he swayed back and forth (unlike Stevie Wonder who makes it look like he has a cat on his back). How should we memorialize this great American?

If I recall correctly, it was actually Ray Charles who inspired Stevie Wonder to go into the music business.

Not to be disrespectful, but I actually kind of prefer Stevie's music. Innervisions is such a dank album. What's the best Ray Charle's record in people's opinions? I've heard a lot of singles, but not very many albums.

I don't know if it's his best, but my personal sentimental favorite is "Ingredients in a Recipe for Soul" (1963). I found it in the attic when I was a kid and was transfixed. It's from his "pop" period at ABC and has the infamous bleached-white choirs, but I happen to like the way they contrast with his black soul/gospel delivery. And the string arrangements are gorgeous. It has the ultimate version of "Over The Rainbow" - guaranteed to make you weep within a few bars. The album's not available on iTunes but you can sample one tune - "That Lucky Old Sun" - from the Malcolm X soundtrack.
Apart from that, I'd recommend one of the Atlantic/Rhino best-of collections - The Birth of Soul is the most complete.

You missed the "All of the above" option.
(Come on, you knew someone would complain about the poll choices)
I like Stevie's music better too (I like more of the Funk), but Ray really opened a lot of doors and laid the foundations for the like of Stevie.

I didn't mean to imply an opinion one way or the other on whose music was better. I was just noting that Stevie Wonder was inspired to enter the music business by Ray Charles' performances. It will be interesting to see what he has to say about this.

Hmmm, I didn't get the "Make fun of the blind" memo.
It says a considerable amount about your character.

Probably safer than you'd think. You'd have to be a geeky f*cking blind guy to want these forums read to you.

I can hear them now "If that's what I've been missing by being blind, I feel blessed"
