Do you put your powerbook to sleep or do you let it run 24/7?

I would like to keep my 15" running, but I am concerning about wear/heat issues. Is this a bad idea?

Put it to sleep.

Why leave it running 24/7 if you don't need to.

It conserves energy as well.
Cheers,

Do you leave your car running when you don't need it ?

Wake Up takes about 3 seconds ... that's nothing.

Sleep

It's so much easier than rebooting all of the time! Plus Apple designed all of their machines to use sleep instead of shutting down all of the time.

My computer has been running since I got it. It only gets restarted when the software gets updated and it's mandatory.

Regardless of the software, parts of the laptop will suffer premature wear if you keep if on 24/7. Feel like an LCD replacement?

Sleep is great. And it wakes up in just seconds (really the opposite of me after a night of drinking ). Also I notice it barely uses up the battery while sleeping, which is nice.

The only times I can think of to restart are after you install new software. As for actually shutting it down, I'd only do that while travelling.

That depends on usage. But as others already pointed out, why treat a notebook as if it was a server, if this is not absolutely necessary? Sleep won't hurt it at all. To the contrary, it is a wonderful solution to avoid rebooting all the time and to be able to move the machine while it is ready at any moment to wake up and work in a couple of seconds.

I usually let it sleep, then about 4-5 days of uptime goes by, and I shut it down for the night to let it rest

Only sleep when I am not at home or transporting, otherwise it's on 24/7 running RC5-72. If my internal fans go bad which might happen since they are always running, I'll get one of those cooling pads or get AppleCare to take care of it while they fix my LCD (which is fine now but down the road....).

If I put my PowerMac G4 dual 1 gig to sleep, it will kernel panic every time on waking.

I can put my Pismo G3 PB to sleep and it will usually be OK. But if Entourage is running after midnight when it awakes from sleep the OS crashes.

Needless to say, I'm not a big sleep proponent.

Sleep.

Wake up takes 2 seconds, uptime typically 2-4 weeks (reboot into a test partition sometimes, software installation, etc.). I spend 50+ hours on this sucker, and have done so for 3.5+ years (rev. A tibook).

Also, locations set up for various network locations where I find myself.

Can't ask for a better setup. Poor Windows users having to put up with such rubbish in this area. I feel sorry for them.

I usually sleep it mainly beacuse i travel with it quite a bit. When it's at home, i would leave it running, but I don't want my cat to walk all over it.

I always put mine to sleep. I never turn it off... I just close it, throw it into my bag & go... I almost never leave it completely off... And I keep it in the bag when I'm not using it, unless I'm charging it... But then again I normally plug it in when I take it out to use it (with exceptions, but not the majority of the time)...

I usually reboot once or twice a week, because sometimes I quit all my running apps (that I always have going) and rebooting was an easy way to restore them. Now, however, I'm trying to not use reboot, but a logout & login. I was doing great and set my longest streak up until 10.3.5 was released... Thought that streak was just under 7 days... I had to reboot again today due to today's JS update...

Put it to sleep. It's virtually the same as powering it down, except that you don't have to wait for startup time.

The only time I leave it on 24-7 is when I'm downloading stuff off of bittorrent or acquisition.

My laptop will be two years old in November. I sleep it when I am traveling (back and forth to work, going to clients offices), but I run SETI @ home often when I think about getting my laptop out of its bag. (And the fan goes full steam when I run SETI) I haven't had any problems at all with my TiBook yet, but I have to wonder if I will wear out the fan. (And hopefully if it does die, it goes before applecare expires. )

insomniac

I use my PowerBook G4 in a docking station as my desktop and testing server for PHP/MySQL developments... stays on 24/7 just in case I want to access something from home. No additional wear or tear really since the hard-drive will go to sleep and the processor will cycle down...

Sleep whenever I'm not using it; I love the fact that it's instantly on when I open the screen although from time to time, I get what must be a kernel panic although I have nothing appearing on screen (the laptop just never wakes up) but I'm hoping that 10.3.5 might fix this problem.

Cheers.
