Hey all
I want to install Tiger. I bought it, but my Mac does not have a DVD drive.
I posted last week about copying the DVD to my ipod on my friend's ibook.
I used Disk Utility to restore the DVD image to the ipod, and it seemed to work OK
Next, I used the system preferences to choose the ipod as the startup disk.
When it restarted, I got some text on the screen saying: type mac-boot then return, which I did but then the screen went blue and there was a flashing question mark on the screen.
The reason for doing all this is that my friend needs her ibook and won't let me take it to my house.
Any ideas???
Alan

There must not be the requisite drivers on the Tiger install DVD to handle booting from an iPod. . .

well you can ask for CDs can't you?
i'd recommend fully erasing the ipod before you restore if this is your only option.

I assumed that he does not wish to wait or pay the extra fee for the CDs.

1. Start Disk Utility
2. Make an image of Tiger DVD
3. Select ipod
4. Name your ipod Mac OS X Install DVD
3. Click Restore.
4. Drag Tiger DVD image to Source.
5. Drag your ipod partition to destination.
6. Click the Restore button.
7. Change startup disk to Mac OS X Install DVD. Reboot.

After I have made the iPod the startup disk and reboot, my mac flashes a question mark a few times then startsup with the internal HD!! GRRRR.
I can't figure out why it won't startup with the iPod. Any ideas?

I bet you're trying to use the USB cable. Macs won't boot from USB; gotta be FireWire.

That's only true if it's a first or second generation iPod. All other iPods have a proprietary connector where the cord you use terminates on the other end either in a FireWire or USB plug.
