So I purchased a new Mac Pro with the stock 2 GBs. I want to upgrade the memory, as I have heard that having 4 slots filled will yield better performance. My question is does it matter if those 2 slots are filled with like sized RAM modules? Do I have to now stick with 1 GB sticks to maximize performance? Or can I stick in 2x2GB and still expect to maximize my performance?

Yes, 4 modules is better than 2, and no, the second two don't have to match the first two.

Ok, do I get this straight: one could add 4GBs (2x2GBS) to the stock 2GBs (2x1GBs) by moving the stock modules to the bottom riser and replacing them with the new modules on the top riser? But the performance would be better by adding 4x1GBs instead? How would you add these? Would it make more sense to first buying 2x1GBs, then later purchase 2x2GBs, to make it 8GBs total. Does that make more sense, or should I purchase 6GBs right away? I'm on a budget. This is a bit confusing.

I would suggest 4x2GB and sell the 2x1GB that came with it. Then you have 8GB in the second best configuration and room for growth.

I don't know yet what the performance impact will be, but I got 2x2, put them in the top and moved one of the 1s down to the bottom. I certainly wouldn't fill the machine with 1GB units, as that's just crippling expansion. Further, a set of 2 2GB is cheaper than 2 sets of 1GB (got mine at OWC). I know it would be a bit faster though.

Do not sell the 1GB sticks, if your mac pro buggers up, you need to have those for sending it back to Apple.
