Don't know how those permissions would have gotten changed so I guess you're right.
But I still don't know how or why this all started with a kernel panic during a Spotlight search. I had to get Disk Warrior to fix directory corruption, possibly caused by me turning it off when it seemed to stick at the loading screen on the next reboot. I have no panic.log for it, I only have one from February. Oh well.
Isn't it a shame you can't virtualize Leopard in any way, I keep building virtual machines to test Windows related things, saves having to put a 2nd PC together.

Apparently Leopard Server can be installed in VMWare, although it doesn't say anything about Client:

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about that.
It's a bit expensive to buy VMWare/Fusion and then Leopard server, unless you have a use for it.

and that the uid and gid for nobody is -2... it seems like the
problem here must indeed be the fault of nobody.
[somehow]
Anyway, I'm glad it all worked out!

FWIW, here's what the plist for nobody should read like:
$ dscl . -read /Users/nobody
AppleMetaNodeLocation: /Local/Default
NFSHomeDirectory: /var/empty
Password: *
PrimaryGroupID: -2
RealName: Unprivileged User
RecordName: nobody
RecordType: dsRecTypeStandard:Users
UniqueID: -2
UserShell: /usr/bin/false

Huh, you're right, the UID for nobody is -2, which is kind of dumb since uid_t is defined to be an unsigned value on Darwin.

I am having the permanent "Estimating indexing time" with spotlight, when I remove any of my RAID partitions from the privacy tab, in this case LF Pro. I've let it run for 3-4 days, and notice that the .Spotlight-V100 directory on the drive stops increasing in size at about 240.83MB. Following the thread, I don't have the same results. Activity Monitor does show mdworker process running, two of them actually.
This command sudo fs_usage -f filesys mds mdworker mdimport gave me the below output
Code:

One of the mdworker processes is running as my user, and the other as _spotlight.
