I received an iPad Mini for my birthday, and it was shrink-wrapped. Opened it up, 94% charged. How do they do this?

There's an Efreeti with a hand crank generator in the box that leaves when you open it. If you open enough you may actually spot it leave.

There's a machine called a shrink wrapping machine. It applies a thin plastic film over the box and then heat seals it.

They charge them in the factory, ship by air and they don't stay on shelves very long.

My "work" iPad 2, which doesn't get used much, will often be at 100% even though it's been more than a week since it's been plugged in.

On a device that has a standby time of 30 days on a full battery and that sells faster than Apple can make more, how is it surprising that the thing is still almost fully charged?
Battery technology has come a ways since the PowerBook G4.

My PowerBook G3 used to sleep for weeks and weeks on a full charge when it was new.

My PowerBook G4 would last a week. Are you're sure you're not talking about holding a charge when it's switched off?

Switched off, a newer charged iPad or iPhone would probably last well over a year.

According to Wikipedia, LiPo-type batteries like those in an iPad have a self-discharge rate (what it will lose when not turned on) of 5%/month. That rate lacks any citation, and I have heard the figure of 20%/month for older LiMH-type batteries, but either of those would explain it having 94% charge left.
Note that it loses 20% of the REMAINING charge. The charge after 2 months is 64% (0.8*0.8), after 3 months it is 51% (0.64*0.8) etc.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
